F M. M Driggs the newly elected President delivered an able address of welcome after which he was followed by many of the members in short speeches The meeting was an enthusiastic one and many new students have had their names added to the roll and signed signed- the constitution and laws by-laws thus becoming mem members bers The increase of enrollment is a great Y encouragement to all the Delta and we predict another prosperous year for them ON Monday Munday October 2 nd the question question question ques ques- tion Resolved that the United States should adopt a single gold standard will be debated F. F M. M Driggs R. R V. V Smith and W. W L. L Ellerbeck taking the affirmative F F. W. W Reynolds L. L E. E Young and Theodore the nega nega- tive This question is a very popular one and there is no doubt but that there will be a large and appreciative audience in attendance THOUGH the Delta Phi and Zeta Zeta- Gamma are for the male students only and have none of the fairer sex in their ranks the girls of the U University ty have always maintained an independent spirit and they have never called upon the boys to admit them to their clubs WHEN Miss Bowman called the girls of the Edina together at the beginning ng of the year a hearty response was made and they and they began the work in earnest for still maintaining the reputation with which they had adorned their society The program listened to last Tuesday by bya a CHRONICLE reporter was the best that he had heard rendered in any other this year The President Miss Bowman delivered an inaugural address which was a credit to the lady and a joy to the mem members bers present She was followed by Miss Larsen on Noted Women Educators Educators Edu Edu- of America who commented ona on ona a great number of the nations nation's former female advocates of the higher refinement and education A recitation by Miss Stoddart and Miss Clark a song by oy I II completed the program and though only j 1 I four members responded every everyone one did i her part so well that it showed study I and thought had been brought into play Tuesday at 3 o'clock is the day for j holding the Edina and every girl 1 student should be enthusiastic enough to enroll her name as a member The Edina is sure to prosper for when patience zeal and courage is back of any concern it never falls through 1 another A LITTLE over one year ago it itself itself itself it- it society was organized taking upon self a name which will ever be remembered remembered remembered by every student of the sity It was that of a man who for fork k nearly a quarter quarter of a century gave his f strength might and will to the building r up of this institution of learning When a society has for its designating name that of John R. R Park the number of members should reach up in into to the hundreds hun hUll to show honor and praise to our our former President who had the respect of every student We sincerely hope that 5 this organization is still in existence t and that the older students will give it a hearty support We say Dont Don't give up but with a little courage and am bif bring the John R. R Park to the head o- o tion all the U University ty societies THE idea exists in the minds of many r 1 that the simple preparation of their studies is the crowning effort the of-the days day's work t Many students go to their school day in and day out concentrating their r minds entirely on that Latin or that Physics lesson never averting from the r. r general rule but constantly following a pro program ram from which even if time could he be had they would not turn There are a large number on the theother theother other hand who though faithful to their studies turn to something else for information information information mation realizing that by a constant concen concentration concentration con con- cen of mind on any anyone one subject not even looking for other references makes the person narrow and contracted t in his hi thoughts The motto Business before pleasure is a good rule to follow but duty to ourselves has a broader scope than we little imagine The world contains at present a society element into which all are more or less thrown and a person is judged not only from his manners and politeness but by his intelligent way of speaking and appearing The boy and girl of today must associate associate ate te with good company where they partake partake partake par par- take of the influence and link themselves to companions where they may be taught refinement and learn of the higher education For this reason we wish to impress impress' upon the minds of every University student the importance of society work and the good that we can derive there there- from ON entering the office of President Kingsbury and looking to your left your eye will rest upon a group of pictures pictures pic pic- tures lIres of some of Utah's most noted and popular men and who were once students of the old old Deseret University An inscription found within the frame tells you that it was presented to Dr John R. R Park as a token of esteem and gratitude by the members of the Zeta Gamma Society This group of photos tells a story and when the Zeta of to-day to beholds beholds be be- holds it a feeling of pride should enter his is heart for it tells him that his society is the oldest of its kind in the sity Having had an eventful career for many years and through the hearty support support support sup sup- port that it has received it still holds forth with as much enthusiasm among its mem members bers as ever The Zeta Gamma has its meetings every Thursday evenings at 7 30 and having elected a strong corps of officers We trust that it may continue to have a hearty support and a prosperous year Miss Lutie Van 93 Normal is back this year doing Post-Graduate Post wor work k Mr P.
