Show Green River Melon Days Coming This Saturday ith the promise of "all the free watermelon v'ou eiin oat." Croon Kivor Melon Me-lon Hays will lH held Sat-unlay, Sat-unlay, September U(", l;)70 at luoeii Kivor, Vtah. The traditional Melon Days celebration will recall the little known but illustrious history of melon growing in Green Kivor. l.ooal legend has it that years ago a man came across a melon growing on a vine far from cultivated land. Ho was so pleased with its flavor and texture ho saved and planted it's seeds. This originated Green Rivers famous round white watermelon with its ama.'.ing keeping qualities. Those melons were served at the l'.U2 celebration after af-ter the completion of the first wagon bridge across the Green Kivor. A few of the pioneer white melons are still grown, but after many years of careful selection sel-ection and cross-breeding Green River's watermelons are now green. The growing grow-ing climate is also excellent excel-lent for cantaloupe. In fact. Green River cantaloupe canta-loupe have such a naturally natur-ally sweet taste that they have won top awards at county, state and world fairs. Melon Days was first celebrated in a big way in the 1 SCO's with special trains bringing in visitors from throughout the state, including a governor or two. This year, townspeople, townspeo-ple, and Green River's melon me-lon growers are preparing a full day of activities to rival the excitement and gaiety of yesteryear. The festivities will begin at i a.m. with n Melon Day parade depicting the past and present history of tho Green Kivor area with floats, marching bands, and horsemen. Highlighting tu) parade will bo the Melon Day (uoen and her attendants, atten-dants, to bo selected Friday Fri-day night. For children, a mini parade is planned with tho fire department's truck spraying free candy to young parade watchers. Tho parade ends at tho City Dark, where the .loop Fosse will begin a busy day of distributing watermelon water-melon slices al you can eat ! This year, park festivities will include the World (V Fun rides for youngsters, plus booths' and games for everyone. At 11 a.m. at tho rodeo arena, the Saddle Dais will host a gymkhana competition compe-tition event for horsemen of all ages. At ;" p.m., Tho Green River Roping Club will present a delicious old - fashioned pit barbecue barbe-cue beef dinner, followed by team roping, calf roping, rop-ing, and ladies barrel racing, rac-ing, with contestants expected ex-pected from a -1-state area. A Saddle Pal queen and her attendants will lend their horsemanship skills and beauty to the fun at the rodeo arena. Topping off Saturday's events will be the Melon Days Dance at 9 p.m., to the country western music of the "Can-yonlanders." "Can-yonlanders." Sunday, the roping club will continue its barrel racing and ro ing activities to wind up Green River Melon Days, 1970. |
