- a time and a place for students to voice their opinions and air their ideas A possible place for the forum could be the Sunburst lounge in the Union Building The microphone could be made available for certain times each weekday mini-skirt- mini-skirt- rt 1 rt e ’SOAtEBdbV PAYS FOR EVERY DISCOUNT THEY ?ET TO ‘ i ANb PRIEEiS SEEM (NDIOATT il WHO"'' u t ' s I t I mini-skirts- Campus Forum By USUSL Readers : Zapped Knight Unaware Dear Editor: Zorro the Zapped Norman Knight has suggested the King knight) is sacrificing his ideals that he is a mugwump The King may or not be sacrificing the ideals of the Zapped Knight whether the king is sacrificing his own ideals would seem to be only known by the King himself The Zapped Knight has already assumed that conservative ideals are righteous and that knowledge of facts would preclude a "radical” position The Zapped knight may not be aware that in the faraway land of America it was the radicals who revolted against the tyrant George The Zapped Knight assumes that unaware knights will be found on the fence where they are easily swayed After "studying both sides" these individuals will presumably choose one side of the (ex-whit- e fence The King may realize that in reality most unaware knights find themselves on one side of the fence without under standing w'hy The King may feel that unless one has studied the problems at hard he has no business hopping off the fence It may be the King’s ideal to be The King might even feel that his proper place is on the fence given his responsibility for all his subjects The Zapped Knight may find that "the first appealing cause comes along and drafts him as a member of the shouting tax on business is expected to produce clan” The shouting clans are $46 million next year and the 7 per cent found on either side of the fence not on income tax on financial institutions is the fence The clan shouting calculated to yield $2 million which the Zapped Knight has joined is Nebraska another newcomer in that headed for another faraway land of which area enacted a corporate and personal in- he is unaware propably come tax The rates set by the state Board DAVNF R GOODWIN of Equalization are 10 per cent of the federal tax on personal income and 2 per cent of a corporation’s taxable income Nine states increased sales taxes The Exists range of such taxes is 2 per cent to 5 i 5 per cent The only states that do not tax sales are Alaska Delaware Montana New My husband is on the faculty and I should like to comment on the article reHampshire Oregon and Vermont Eight states boosted cigarette taxes half garding discrimination Last year I was of them-IowCalifornia Alabama and president of Valley View Nursery School Maine- - jacking them up to 10 cents But and we occupied a large building We they’re still a cent below the 11 cents colwanted to sublet an apartment and I lected in New Jersey Texas and Washingwent to the housing office at the Universiton ty I indicated that we were very anxious to rent the apartment and the woman who was interviewing me apparently misunderstood I only wanted the office to try to Little Bit OF Luck rent our apartment to anyone who came In but she thought I wanted only white OWATONNA AP — Jerome Americans She told me that when townsMint Rein of Owatonna was driving across a people did not want to rent to certain wooden railroad overpass when the floorkinds of people they could list their proing gave way The car fell on top of a perty with the University and the man boxcar of a proving train before finally would then take the listing and see that tumbling to the ground Rein climbed only the desired type of person was given out shaken was treated at a local hospital this listing I was quite angry to hear this for minor injuries and released but at the time I did not know what to open-minde- William J Conway AP State Taxes Are Rising And Spreading State taxes like rivers in flood season are rising and spreading The heavy legislative year over in all but a few' states left less ground where citizens could find refuge from taxes levies are in effect on: Cigarettes in 49 states all but North Carolina -- -- Sales in 44 Corporate income in 40 Personal income in 38 Gasoline in all Press survey shows An Associated legislatures went in more for increasing old taxes than finding new sources of 11 revenue The Take for instance California tax prolegislators approved a gram the biggest tax increase in the state’s history It concluded boosts in income sales cigarette liquor banks corporation and inheritance taxes But about Si 15 million was set aside for property tax relief in 1968-6Three states entered the income tax field Michigan’s Legislature adopted a package that included for the first time in that state Income taxes on individuals corporations and financial institutions The personal income tax rate is 26 per cent It is expected to bring in about $240 million a year The 56 per cent corporate income tax which replaced a complicated -- -- 9 s mini-hem- Four Basic Systems Of Idea Exchange is usually casual Advantages: persons are kept interested through participation and exchange is relaxed allowing time for thought Disadvantages: discussions are often hard to moderate they may get off the track and waste time and they don't work well with large groups Lecture This is a unilateral system in the sense that ideas or facts originate from only one source with another individual or group listening The mood can range from casual to tense The advantages of this system: presentation of material can he made to many in a minimum of time lending itself to "mass" education or instruction and order is easy to keep Rumors have it (I’ve warned you about rumors before) that a revolution is about to begin in the world of women’s fashions To appear within a few weeks is the new style the mini-heBecause of the controversy of the mini is designed for the girl skirt the mini-hemadness Those caught up in the mini-skid unfortunate individuals who spent all their available cash on can now be unshackled from their self wrought bondage Stores throughout the nation will soon feature the mini-hein all colors and patterns to match or cos ntrast the manufactured The s can then be sewn on the boto increase the ttom of the mini-skilength to a more sensible length The new fashion came in the light of much adverse comment such as those wide-lcirculated statements: "I think that shall never see a thing as ugly as a knee!” shows everything but or "The mini-skigood taste!” I will take the first statement to task however There does exist one thing uglier back of a knee Maybe the than a knee-thcomment can be changed to: "I think that I shall never see a thing as ugly at the back of a knee!” Someone stated the other day that he was sure that ninety-nin- e percent of the see like to girl’s knobby knees I woboys nder who the ninety-nin- e percent was that he talked to Could it possibly be the degenerates that he associates with? Oops! I just violated one of Dale Carnegic’j rules! Have you noticed how many style con sdous girls on campus wear They can be counted on one hand with five fingers missing Possibly its that hid den urge to be noticed that drives girls to challenge common decency and makt themselves a public display It’s unfortunate that some think they have to follow the fad to be accepted fad and you’re Succumb to the mini-skiready for the next fad that comes along Could be that the next fad will be heartache and despair because you became more involved in the mod than you desired I think that the point was missed when I spoke out against beards I have nothing against beards but what they are associated with today A hundred years ago many of the great statesmen wore beards including Abraham Lincoln i (perhaps because the Gillette Spoiler hadn’t yet been invented) However these men stood for democratic principles not lawlessness rioting and irresponsibility Now just for those few who like to read more into something than is actually written I want to say that not everyone who wears a beard fits in the latter category It’s that same age old story of the minority spoiling a thing for othen Grow a beard and society automatically classifies you as a member of the new movement I rest my case! I was informed the other day that concrete not cement was used in construction of the Fine Arts Center Sorry that I missed that technical point I’ve heard engineers on construction jobs also refer to concrete as "mud” Therefore the Fine Arts Center was also made of mud It was also pointed out that many of the world’s leading architects use concrete not only on the exterior but also on the interior If I decide that I don’t like concrete as a finishing material along with plush carpets natural wood and ornate furnishings I am in the wrong because wy the point of view was contrary that of individual that designed it or those who like it Therefore just because I don’t consider the Fine Arts Center as a modern creatspectacle of the genius of human art other does and as the architect ivity critics I will concede that I’m an Ignorant slob In the field of art because I disagreed Like the old adage goes: "Every pig t0 his wallow!” f ! L rt One step further: a Union committee could be established to try the idea Priority should be given to campus students and instructors Possible topics for discussion: International and national political events student government and university policy campus complaints etc Democratic governments and free societies are championed by a continuous interplay of communications argumentation and debate Step up on the stump and let your student voice crush the barriers to student power Disadvantages: audience may become dull from lack of participation it’s hard to gauge how ideas are being accepted and poor lecturers may waste time of many Dialog Two or more participate The participants are usually committed to a particular ideology or way of thinking but are willing to share ideas with others and perhaps gain from their ideas The atmosphere is usually more serious than plain discussion because more than fust learning is involved Advantages: participants are geared more for change and improvement and the direction of exchange is usually more definite Disadvantages: not geared for mass participation although many may observe and benefit thereby and exchange may become too specialized resulting in "loss of vision of the whole scene” Debate As with dialog participants are committed to an idology The primary object though ie to defend predetermined ideas or facts The atmosphere is much more tense than discussion The main difference between debate and dialog is the attitude thus object of the participants Advantages: provides an intense dichotomic demonstration of ideas for an observer to watch Disadvantages: usually of little value to participants because attachments to ways of thinking are often emotional as well as rational Debate heightens the emotional mood thus negating much of the power of logic and reason -- short-sighte- Packer Analysis There are about four basic systems of idea or information transfer involving vocal interaction between or among persons: discussion lecture dialog and debate I will assign an arbitrary definition for purposes of distinction It should be kept in mind that there are combinations of these systems Each method has its advantages and disadvantages Other ways of idea exchange and development such as reading observing dialog with oneself etc will be disregarded Discussion This system of exchange involves two or more participants The actual exchange of ideas is multilateral that is many ideas or bits of informatioon are originated by different participants The atmosphere of exchange is usually through participants The atmosphere of exchange To Appear Mini-He- m The Creation Of A USU Forum into his brain The ability to communicate is developed by discussion Ideas are compared and sorted they are placed’ on the open market where they are allowed to compete for prominence More than classroom involvement is necessary There should be a regular forum for the exchange of ideas and philosophies The "Campus outside the classroom Forum” section in Student Life only fills a very small part of the need for idea 967 Zapped by Mark Zaugg Editorial Discussion is a valuable tool in a democracy It promotes an informed public so that the people can make sound decisions Just as discussion helps the People as a whole it also helps the individual with his own problem of making the most out of all the facts and contradictions stuffed 3 g g Discrimination d t do about it I told her we would rent to anyone The owner of the nursery school building made derogatory statements about foreign students when he talked about renting In our work in setting up the nursery school last year I met with' many townspeople and I was frankly shocked at their intense dislike not only for foreign students but of students and faculty in general I came to the conclusion that they genuinely feared the ideas of the University progress and an open mind were anathema to them I even became aware of the fact that the local people disliked LDS from other states - they are different too Eleven years ago the students at the University of Texas (a bastion of discrimination during the early 50’s) decided to recommend that students only patronize stores and shops which would serve everyone They made up decals with an appropriate slogan and then the committees went around and asked businessmen if they would serve Negroes etc The decals were placed on the front door of all cooperating stores’ It worked there very well however this method only works when there are many students and faculty concerned with idiscrimination Is this the case at USU? I think business and housing need to be seriously and minutely examined in ! Logan Lastly may ( I say that the statements as you by the foreign student-adviso- r quoted them were very disappointing He asks for students to come to him but it is clear to see why they would not He would only give them a lame explanation about "some misunderstandings” That whole statement was a cliche wordy The majority of vague and people in this area will not work to remedy the situation When Negroes feel discriminated against they drive to Ogden and talk with the NAACP man down there because they do not expect to get any help from anyone in Logan The remedy must come from concerned students and faculty Where are they??
