In the end, all of this—even the swearing—should develop you into a real live journalist. I'm lucky to be one of those real live journalists. I'm gainfully employed in the career of my admittedly lateformed dreams, far outside the walls of a high school classroom. And I couldn't have gotten here without The Chronicle. I've had the great luck of working with a lot of exceptional people during the past three years, people I never would have met otherwise. Some taught me about the inner workings of the Legislature, others turned me into a football fan. The Chronicle's adviser, Jim Fisher, is someone I could always count on to talk me off the ledge. His professional advice has been invaluable to me and to the paper. Dustin Gardiner was an exceptional boss and a journalist whose work I feel lucky to have edited. Tyler Cobb—I live in awe of your photo skillz. Alyssa Whitney's designs have made a mark on this paper like no one else's. And one final shout-out: To 2007 Editor in Chief Matthew Piper, whose harsh criticism and dreamy blue eyes sold me on the managing editor gig. Yes, I met my fiancé at The Chronicle. How's that for a job endorsement? OK, OK, I'm wrapping up. It's my last night at The Chronicle, and I'm writing this on deadline. If you think my thoughts are trite, boring or scattered, sue me. Well, sue Sara Copeland—it's her mess now letters@chronicle.utah.edu well might hate BYU more than I love Utah—blessed be Her name. To put all levity aside, I must take a moment to recognize the most important mentor I've had in my college career. I'm no Ty Cobb. I might not give Ho percent each game or take it one game at a time. I might at times try to rush greatness. But anything positive about me as a photojournalist I owe to Jim Fisher. I'm fortunate enough to have had my only year on senior staff COBB continued from Page 7 There is no way I was going to learn in class what to do when someone tries to guilt me out of taking photos. I had to learn that on the fly as I waited for police, firefighters and paramedics to get to the scene when a man fell three stories into the Marriott Library atrium. I've captured more news through the years with my camera than I can count. And it wasn't always as challenging as someone falling, but I had to find a good picture no matter what. One thing I could always count on for a good photo was sports. I won't deny it, flying out to the 2009 Sugar Bowl and watching the Utes show Alabama they were a force to be reckoned with made my job sound glorious. I didn't have to watch from the stands. I stood on the field during the first quarter as touchdown after touch- COLLEGE atm ADVISING CORPS as he set Utah's single-season record for receptions and total yards in the game, bumping the bar up to 8i receptions and 1488 yards. "I couldn't be more proud of a football team than I was tonight," Whittingham said. 1.frome@chronicle.utah.edu at The Chrony be the last year Jim serves as adviser. His crass jokes, gruff criticism and insightful input have created whatever photojournalist I might be. To him, I express my appreciation. My time with The Chrony has been valuable in ways that I might not yet fully understand. I'm sure that the excitement, drama and everything else I have experienced will continue to pay off long after my time spent wandering the campus with my camera is over. To the 2009-2010 Chrony staff, I say thank you. m.mangum@ chronicle.utah.edu down rained in that stadium. Through the years, I've taken pictures of athletes in gymnastics, basketball, softball and ice hockey. You name it, I've been there with camera in hand. Even though sports was where I excelled and I made it look easy, it never was. We had to drive to most road events, which meant we had a LOT of time to kill, but that just led to experiences I will never forget. I once stood on an icy stretch of I-80 in Wyoming for hours with sports editors Tony Pizza and Chris Kamrani, killing time by making snow angels in the middle of the road. The Chronicle has given me countless memories, hundreds of thousands of pictures, invaluable job experience and a number of industry awards, but I would sum up my time at The Chronicle with a few simple life lessons: It is what it is. Take it one day at a time. Always give it Ho percent.
