On Thursday, April 17, Kenneth Brewer will give a public reading at the Ogden Valley Branch Library at 7:00 p.m. Copies of his books will be available for purchase and autographing. Brewer was appointed for a five-year term as Utah Poet Laureate on January 24, 2003. Brewer has published several books of poetry, given numerous readings and conducted writing workshops throughout the western states. He retired from Utah State University after 32 years in the English Department as a teacher of writing. He lives in Logan with his wife Roberta Stearman and their two schnauzers, Gus and Jasmine. Brewer is a member of the Board of Directors of the Utah Arts Council and serves on the advisory board for the Writers @ Work conference. He has served on the editorial board for Weber Studies, and on advisory boards for Petroglyph Magazine and for Utah State University Press. The public reading will also mark the kickoff of a series of special events in anticipation of the Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition, “Key Ingredients: America’s Food Traditions,” which will be at the Ogden Valley Branch Library from July 4 through August 16. It is the newest exhibition of Museum on Main Street, a partnership of the Smithsonian Institution and state humanities council in service to citizens of rural America. Through a selection of artifacts, photographs, and illustrations, “Key Ingredients” celebrates America’s cultural diversity and shared food traditions. An anthology of poetry, Appetite: Food as Metaphor: An Anthology of Women Poets will be distributed for those who are willing to sign up for a subsequent discussion about it. Dr. Sally Shigley of Weber State University will lead that poetry discussion on Thursday, May 22, at the Ogden Valley Branch Library. “Food Lore” Writing Workshop There will also be sign-up sheets for the “Food Lore” creative writing workshop. The program is sponsored by the Salt Lake City Writing Center, in association with the Utah Humanities Council. The curriculum is based on a two-part workshop and is FREE and open for Key Ingredients Exhibition Schedule *ALL events to be held at the Ogden Valley Branch Library, unless otherwise noted. Session One will be held on Tuesday, May 13, from 6:30 until 8:30 at the library. The first session concerns invention strategies and drafting techniques. The teachers provide examples of poems, memoirs, and essays with a recipe included. Group activities encourage participants to discover “Key” food experiences in their own lives and learn how to write about them. Session Two will be held on Tuesday, June 10, from 6:30 until 8:30. Participants will bring the “rough draft” of their Food Lore poem, essay, or memoir. Photocopies of the drafts will be distributed and read aloud by the writers. Participants will listen while following the text on their own copies and write responses directly onto their draft copy. This way, each writer will have response from everyone present. This proves invaluable when they go home to polish the final draft. After the second session, all participants prepare a final draft for submission to the Rough Draft magazine, published by the Friends of the Weber County Library. Some of these will be selected for the FALL issue, to be published in September. For more information, call Bob Sawatzki, special events coordinator, Ogden Valley Branch Library, telephone: 7452220.
