Air Force Base. The Airman’s Attic makes available new and used clothing, baby items, house wares, books, and limited furniture to military personnel E-5 and below, and their immediate family members. They are in des- perate need of donations of children’s toys, disposable diapers, hygiene products, and non-perishable food. The American Red Cross of Northern Utah will deliver the donated items to The Airman’s Attic on behalf of your service organization. What a great way to work together to support our local military families. Special appreciation is noted for the parents and students of Valley Elementary School who have participated in this program, the pledges of the Weber State University Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Lori Birkbeck of Eden with Kids Who Care, and Eagle Scout Derek Mabey of Layton. For more information, contact Susan Hoxer, Volunteer Coordinator for the American Red Cross of Northern Utah at 801-625-0859; or Laura Hunsaker of Airman’s Attic at 801-586-2699. Please bring your donations to the northern Utah Chapter of the American Red Cross located at 2955 Harrison Blvd., Ogden. Taking a break after loading the Red Cross truck are Catherine Clark, Devon Hoxer, Lacee Dickson, Kassie McGonegal, Carlee Morse, and Susan Hoxer. Sixth Graders Explore Ancient Egypt and Creatures Under the Sea By Carlee Morse and Megan Brandt, Sixth Grade Reporters On April 3, sixth grade students at Valley Elementary recently researched, made models, and lectured about some really cool things. We invited Mr. Dick Andrew, Vice President of Marketing from Lagoon, to visit our exhibits—as if we had constructed an Epcot Center. All the kids in the whole school toured through the exhibits. Our classrooms looked so great and authentic that we wondered if Lagoon might really be interested! Here’s what happened. Mrs. Hogge’s classes (6-2 and 6-4) studied ancient Egypt. They made models of artifacts, demonstrated how to mummify a chicken, and dressed in costumes. Students took a barge ride, as if riding on the Nile, down the hall into their doorway. Oracles greeted the students and gave information and warnings about the future. An inscription and hanging partition decorated their door- way. They played Egyptian music (a pentatonic scale), which they had learned about from Mrs. Hogge. A very unusual project there was Brian James’s. He made a model of King Tut in his sarcophagus, which was very detailed. Mrs. Evans’s 6-1 and 6-3 learned about different kinds of sea creatures. They researched, made models of the creature they had learned about, and lectured about the creature and where it lived in the ocean. The students learned about Sea Turtles, Orca Whales, Stingrays, Sharks, Clownfish, and much, much more! They learned about creatures that lived at different layers of the ocean—from the sea shore to the deepest parts of the ocean. The class of 6-1 and 6-3 of Mrs. Evan’s built a teenage size Blue Whale. We have to keep its size down to 50 feet, because that’s all the room we had to build it in. Its tongue was nine feet long, and its heart is the size of a Volkswagen beetle. It had a blow spout and PVC pipes formed its ribs. Kids entered the mouth and walked down through the body. Clint Hardy is retiring from Valley Elementary School as head custodian. Thank you, we will miss you! From the grateful staff and students at Valley Elementary. 801-745-4000 2555 WOLF CREEK DR.
