Show SPRINGVILLE HERALD 19 Mazda MX-5 lata: Zoom-zoomingjust got better MCbegjns faculty, staff ffving campaign Thursday, September 6, 2007 Daniel Souza STAFF WRITER Adding a new dimension to a best seller without diminishing di-minishing its driving joy is no mean feat. But Mazda has pulled it off. The icon of two-seat roadsters now is available with a power j 'fr '-i.-tt-.'f-- it, t . (gar; ftfl&fcratrrm 3' fri.'f f : K t ' v ? 3 ? The Japanese maker has been vigilant for opportunities opportuni-ties to extend the 'reach of the car that sets the zoom-zoom. zoom-zoom. Hence the new MX-5 MX-5 kid on the block, with a hard hat on. To preserve the Miata's am VJ r'l : 1 ( 1 I ' I (t , r fun-loving spirit and love of weekend getaways, the new hard top performs what seems like a magic trick: disappearing on cue when the 'open' button is pressed. The MX-5's trunk provides a just-right 5.3 cubic cu-bic feet of capacity (think St comfortable put away golf bag) whether the roof is hard or soft, stowed or overhead. The two roof sections fold like a clamshell; the window separates from the middle section and moves forward to the in-between space. And, rather than consuming interior in-terior or trunk room, the folded roof descends into the same storage well located lo-cated above the rear axle and the fuel tank where the soft top would have resided. re-sided. A deck cover mates with the top in the closed mode and shrouds the folded top from view in the open mode. Opening and closing cycles cy-cles last only 12 seconds, making this the fastest power-operated retractable retract-able hard top in the U.S. An indicator lamp and warning beeps advise the driver when the operation is complete. To maintain main-tain body rigidity with an opening that's 1.8-inches wider and 3.2-inches longer lon-ger than the soft-top's aperture, material thick nesses of the body panels surrounding the opening have been increased and two corner-reinforcing brackets have been added. Altogether, the net weight increase over the soft-top model is only approximately approxi-mately 80 pounds (depending (depend-ing on trim levels), quite reasonable considering the benefits delivered. Drivers will still enjoy the highly-responsive MZR-series 2.0-liter with 166-horsepower, making the Miata a convenient truth to sports cars lovers. The sophisticated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine gives strong performance, has an inspiring exhaust note, and most important of all, is brilliantly responsive. It reacts to driver commands with lightning-quick reflexes, re-flexes, and offers progressive progres-sive power delivery. Truly a fun car to drive, Mazda's MX-5 also shines on looks. The first- and second-generation MX-5 Miata exterior design is a rounded shape with a wide footprint, large-radius corners and deep side contours. On the third generation, gen-eration, the Coke-bottle shaped center section is eliminated. Instead, the designers have used an entirely new oval shape in which the seating area is now the widest portion of the car. It makes for a roomier, safer cockpit and yet still expresses the compact com-pact look of a lightweight sports car. If you have been thinking think-ing about to get one of this, let me help you: Get it! The little car is as fun as it will get with comfort and style. But its selling point for Utah drivers comes with its hard top. No longer a problem during winter months. So go ahead, now you have a reason to have a mid-life crisis. Expect 21 mpgcity and 26 mpghighway. Base Price -$24,400 . Price as tested -$27,620 Daniel Souza can be reacned at sixth.gear. heraldgmaiLcom CE5T CODYSIIO? This year's theme is "One Step Closer to Making a Difference." "The idea is any donation, regardles's of the amount, will benefit the College," said Cristina Pianezzola, director of annual giving. "We encourage all faculty and staff to participate." The program emphasizes empha-sizes participation, not amount.
