Show DEATH OF AN EARLY pioneer PiO NEEP henry parrish Parri sli of west bountiful passed away saturday at the age of 89 years henry parrish Parri sli was born in brownsville Browns ville jefferson co NY N Y juno june 17 1818 about one hundred miles east of hill bill cumorah he comes of old new en england c stock Ms his ancestors we were re of english descent two brothers joel and catli nathan a i we were re among the earliest settlors sett lors lers of velm vel vermont M on t the parrish family of Cen centreville treville lire are descendents of jonhenry joel Joe henry of west bountiful from nathan these two names have been perpetuated through h the respective families H henrys enry 9 s father and mother were born in 1774 and were among amon 11 the pioneers of central new york the elders found them at brownsville Browns ville they and some members of the family readily accepted the gospel message n and were baptized in 1833 the father was in bailin failing C health and requested henry to bea be a father to the family and care for his mother strange too as ho he was the tenth child of a family of twelve his father departed this life in 1831 shortly after the mother and several children moved with the saints near richmond ray co mo passed abrou through za ii all aletho the bobbin dobbings mob bings 0 s and dr ivings and hardships of those memorable days later they settled 55 miles south of nauvoo at pico pi pigeon co n creek where henry was baptized sept by elder gifford they afterwards to nashville iowa ho was one of the minute men when a was issued by the prophet calling for lid aid to defend nauvoo her people and their rights 0 he was one of the first to respond life and musket in hand band ready for action when the prophet selected a certain number of young men crossed the mississippi river to take up his line of march for the indian country or rocky moun aloun fians the parrish family cooked up provisions for them and their horses were quartered in the parrish stables saddled and ready to mount but through the ta of his friends he returned and was confined in carthage jail and lost his life henry was ordained a seventy by jacob gates in tho the winter of 1846 and assigned to the eth quorum ile he was present at the laying 0 of the cornor corner stone of the nauvoo temple and assisted in building that beautiful structure ile he not only paid one tenth of his net earnings jor for that purpose but gave one tenth of his time he left montrose in 1846 being in naturally of charitable and sympathetic nature lie ho assisted with work and means many others to em migrate so that lie he and his mother did not arrive in salt lake city until oct 11 1852 the following april he came to bountiful purchased ten acres which he retained until the dakof day of his death built alog house and lived there two years later he bought a lot east of newton tuttle Tutt los s built aud and lived there until 1878 when ho be moved back to the old farm his mother lived with him until I 1 her death which occurred in 1858 on tho the ord of feb 1831 J ho he was married to mary Millos Alil lessant sant parka parksey by bishop jolin jolia stoker after ibrao children were born ho he went to tho the old endowment house and was sealed by the authority of G cd d ten and five daughters daug liters were vere born to 10 them and chii thirty ty six grandchildren A children and thirty grandchildren grind rande children hildren are left to mou mourn ra his his loss helas he was present at the laying of the cornor corner stone of the salt lake temple april 6 1853 also just forty years later when the capstone capston was ewas laid he assisted in hauling c the rock for that beautiful f ul edifice edi tice ile he also assisted in ill building 0 the east bountiful tabernacle in ill 1601 1861 and the old spanish or mud WAI around the townsite and the two mee meeting titio 0 houses in west bountiful in fact helped in building schoolhouses roads bridges ditches fences mills ete etc incident to the pioneering of a now country nothing 0 pleased him more than when a few years ago go oneff one of his sous sons was called to fill a mission sion to the nations of the earth he 91 gladly adly assisted with means and sympathy and in every way possible he was of a retiring disposition and averse to holding holing 0 any public office was seldom s seen een in in public but most thoroughly Z enjoyed to have his friends come see chat and lodge m with him he and the family are charitable to a fault and no one is ever burh turned from their door he abhorred debt ilig his motto was pay as you go go and live within your income he was an of the mormon creed mind your own business ile he had a strong 0 mind a keen intellect an excellent memory and a very sensitive seua sensa tive nature and never forgot a favor or an injury he was a good father a kind husband a peaceable neighbor and an honest man true to his friendships friends his family and always ready to defend the work of god and her leaders he was a good farmer an occupation he followed all his life with the exception of a part to two or three seasons he spent in boating 0 on the miss river he passed peacefully away saturday morning ma nov 10 1906 at his home in west bountiful surrounded by his family and friends funeral was hold held in the ward meeting 0 house on the patriarchs tolman barlow ashley and briggs ct s and elder israel Isrel barlow jr and bishop muir all old neighbors 0 spoke of his many sterling 0 qualities he was laid peacefully away at the bountiful cemetery peace to his remains |
