Show Pagf 8 Millard County CSPS Thurs May 9 1985 MHS NEWS by Danene Perkins Dr Lindon J Robison to speak at Millard FFA Banquet The annual Parent and Member for the Millard Eagle Banquet Chapter of the Future Farmers of America will be held Tuesday May in 14 the Fillmore at 7 pm School activity room Elementary Lindon J Robison who served as President of the Millard Eagle FFA and will Chapter in be the guest of honor and serve as the guest speaker Dr Robison is a 1963 graduate of Millard High School He later earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Utah State University a Masters of Science degree from the University from of Illinois a PhD degree all in Texas A & M University His profesAgriculture Economics sional experience includes serving as an agricultural economist with the Economic Research Service at the of Agriculture US Department assistant and now associate profeseconomics at sor of agriculture visiting Michigan State University assistant professor at the University and current is visiting of Minnesota associate professor in the Economics at Brigham Young Department First graders from Rebecca Riveros' class weave on intricate First Graders welcome May arrival There has been a special feeling of Spring in the air in the Fillmore first grade with the Elementary's and of May Students arrival teachers alike seem to be feeling the outdoor as fever enjoy they activities In response to the Spring fever took their teachers 1st grade students on a special May Day walk Nature was last Wednesday May the topic under a study during the as the students short excursion looked for the signs of Spring The students also spent some time at the Fillmore City Park where they stopped to serenade the US Forest Service offices with their rendition of "Smokey the Bear” 1st Riveros' Rebecca graders added a little May tradition to the atmosphere in an effort to make May feel a little more welcome Thursday they turned one of the playground's standards into a May basketball Pole The students used a variety of brightly colored ribbons to weave the intricate May Pole pattern Jaren Alt Larsen Jennifer Bond Jessica Heward Ryan Scott Staples Future doctors of Fillmore? The Millard School District maintenance department began installation of an air conditioning system last Wednesday at Fillmore May The School Elementary is system expected to bring much needed relief from the school’s excessive summer and fall heat problems Excessive heat has been a problem which has plagued the school since its opening seven years ago Last Fall as classroom temperatures were reaching up into the 90’s on a daily basis local parents took their Millard School concerns to the After District Board of Education a report from Principal hearing Charles Ferguson and listening to the the comments of the parents a board unanimously approved resolution to study and rectify the situation The first pieces of hardware for the system arrived at the school on Wednesday and work began immediately Inside duct work has required some classes to temporarily move from their classrooms into the media 1i® center but no one has complained "We know that we will have to endure some disruption and inconveniences while the air conditioning is being installed" commented Principal Ferguson "but we know it will be well worth it if it means relief from the heat in the future” Ferguson went on to say that the faculty felt many hours of potential education were wasted since most students had trouble concentrating in and learning hot and humid conditions "It was an impossible situation” stated Ferguson Last month new windows were installed in the school which could be opened to allow fresh air flow into the building from outside That in itself has helped to somewhat relieve the problem according to Ferguson The large scale swamp cooling system is being installed in three areas of the building to test its effectiveness Should they prove to solve the problem as anticipated work will continue the through summer to air condition the entire building WM University or Dr Robison has authored bulover 70 articles letins and chapters in books and has recently completed a text in his area His PhD thesis received a national award from the American Agricultural Economics Association and he is currently listed in the 13th edition Kindergarteners perform and graduate in special ceremonies Fillmore Elementary held a special program last Thursday May 2 for parents and friends of the school’s A to kindergartners “Kindergarten Z” was the title of the event which featured singing and dancing It was followed by the presentation of special diplomas to the kindergarten students Working through the letters of the alphabet the students demonstrated what each letter meant to them Some of the songs featured during the program were "I Love Trash" Come and “Somebody Play” "Raindrops Keep Failin’ On My Head” and many more The students also performed some dances which featured special cowboys and Indians jump roping a kite flying demonstration a special appearance from Oscar the Grouch and much The capacity more audience responded enthusiastically throughout the performance The evening was climaxed by the of diplomas to each presentation student Principal Charles Ferguson was on hand to present the diplomas to the students r Mother's Dr Lindon Robison of American Men and Women of Science He is married to the former Bonnie Baxter The Millard Eagle Chapter has and had another very successful annual and the eventful year banquet culminates the chapter All FFA members and their to be in parents are encouraged at the banquet which attendance concludes the 51st year of activity for the local chapter MHS students to participate in Community Health Fair Students at MHS have been working on projects for the Community Health Fair The topics they have chosen are: Stress Osteoporosis Acne Foot Care Color Analysis Nutrition and VitaBirth Defects and the Blood Pressure mins Effects of Drugs and Alcohol on the Body Students in 8th to 12th grades will be involved The projects are well prepared and We encourage the educational public to come see the Health Fair It will be well worth your time Art Show to be presented MHS The art students arc presenting an Art Show daily from May 6 to 10 at the high school The public is invited to
