'.:; MILLER, 4,.. ,.,,.,, iilt Since we reported- that the waters near Pinedale were too low and clear and that the first day's snowstorm wrecked the opening, we've had many fishermen come forward with their own stories. And let it be known to all and sundry that there were plenty of fish taken. But those who got the fish waited out the bad weather or caught their fish on the bigger waters of the Snake, Green and lower New Fork rivers. The Pinedale waters, close to the little mountain city, were too low and clear for good fishing, The fish, driven to the big waters by the snows and ices of winter, usually wait until the waters rise before they start their trek upstream. High and roily water is usually the sign for them to move. As soon as the runoff ends, the fish seem to be in the streams in goodly numbers. To prove the point, we ran onto one of the Pineda le grocers who knows as much about fishing as anyone. "You have to get down to the big waters of the New Fork to get them," he advised. Whereon we tried and after fighting mud for SO miles returned to the Green River. But the upper Green near Daniel was colder'n a clam. We heard of one fellow who caught a mess of six big browns. Outside that story, we didn't hear of a single fish, nor see one for two days. De Okeh on Snake River Then there is the Snake River story. Hal Cameron, lard Montgomery, Eldredge Grant, Ken Garff and others, reported that fishing hers was excellent. But they used minnows to get them. Hal said it didn't take long between strikesjust sink that bait into the big boles and you had your fun. They broUght home fish to prove It Some of the best reports came from the Green River and New Pork just east of Big Piney. And again. minnow was the best bet. Anyone going Into that area should be prepared with minnows. Bait shops have them. Only dead minnows are allowed in Wyoming. If you can't get minnows then use the next best lures the spoons, pearl killers, flatfish. All of them will work to some extent if you get them down to the fish and keep them acting properly. Hump ea flenderson's Head Funny things happen to fishermen. Take the bump on the head of Jerry Henderson, Salt Lake golf professionaL Jerry was with us on the openingin Daniel, Wyoming. Ma lu Hoop! lain& and Don Hartman had taken their house trailer and six of us were bunked in it. We had stopped in a drift a half mile beyond Daniel. Nothing to do but leave it there and go to sleep. "You know where all the tourists stop at the Lewis Lake Bridge and fly fish for those trout there. Well, those pine trees just behind grab their hooks like demons. There are more hooks in that one tree than anywhere I've ever seen. But you don't climb pine trees for them. "Well, when Harley aqd I came along and with 11 feet we just went to picking.
