Show v By DEXTER C. ELLIS Deseret News Staff Writer- Does alcohol cause up to SO per cent of "Utahs traffic deaths as-- lt . does in some other states? The answer to this question may be provided during 1968 as several of the state's new traffic safety programs get under way In earnest. Among them is a research program, authorized by the 1967 Legislature, under which the blood of every person who dies in a trafflc, accldent will be analyzed for the presence of, alcohol or narcotic drugs. This information, when considered in conjunction With the dead person's driving record, will provide data vitajly needed to attack the impaired driver problem. The program was Intended to have been implemented last year, but obstacles, Including reluctance of morticians to take blood samples, delayed it. DESERET NEWS However, Utaff Public Safe- ' ty 'Commissioner Raymond Jackson said procedure has beeu worked out to assure that the identity of individuals involved will be destroyed after information necessary for pure research has been obtained. This is intended to rule out the use of such information in court litigation. In advance of proof, he and the state medical examiner, Dr. James T. Weston, expressed a belief that the 50 per cent figure of alcohol In- -' volvement In. traffic deaths ma, not be too high in Utah. This Is despite the fact that the per capita consumption of alcohol in Utah is far helow most other states. As the new year opened.
