WYOMING oct 5 thinking that perhaps a few items from these parts might bo of interest to some of your readers we jot down a few and send them for y our consideration the climate here is much colder all the year than in utah rendering fruit raising impracticable this is accounted for by the altitude of the country whose mean elevation ie about feet this renders the difference of temperature between and almy about 30 degrees at the present season but little djin falls most of it being lost while passing over the range of mountains to the southwest for storms chiefly come from that direction the ft enters inters are said to be very severe sometimes the thermometer registering forty and forty five degrees below zero evanston is the county seat of uinta county with a population of about 2000 most of whom are supported directly and indirectly from the railroad industry there are no fruit trees and very scanty gardens and all labor is performed in the workshops and business houses about a halt a mile east prominently situated on a hill is the state insane asylum neatly and conveniently constructed ted and havins some 25 inmates the high school is a nice large building with all modem conveniences electric bellg steam heating apparatus and a very effective method of ventilation an electric plant furnishes light for public and private use enough far in to a mile south and up among the hills is a reservoir the source of a fine system of waterworks water works it is filled from bear river by means of pumping machinery several churches a small number of residences and a few business blocks comprise the only buildings worthy of notice the streets and sidewalks present anything but a pleasing aspect both for the artist and the pedestrian almy is strictly a coal mining district though some few have fenced the meadow land along the liver and are thus enabled to secure a few tons of hav and considerable pasturage this valley is about one and one half milea wide running north and south between two low ranges of hills bear river winds its way along the west side and is at this season of the year very low the patches f willows which grow along its banks are already turning with the silver and golden leaf indicating the touch of autumns magic breath the mines are situated at the foot of the hills on the east and are numbered from one to seven the latter three are worked three are abandoned and one is in litigation the dip of the coal vein is towards the east and varies in pitch decreasing with each advance to the north no 7 mine has a slope of about 5 degrees while no 1 has about 30 in thickness tho vein varies from ten to twenty feet growing better in quality with the descent at present there is a decrease in the output of coal owing possibility to a flux in abo market As the population consists mainly of miners the town is built for convenience and is therefore about three miles in length by about one fourth in width the northern portion is called eed can yon from a small canyon near by of that hue we have therefore two post ollices also some half dozen stores and as many saloons we will not attempt a description of architecture vc have too much respect for jhb feelings of the reader it ia too pain ful suffer it to say a description of one would do tor all but we the heart at present the three churches chuiches chu iches are methodist episcopal and mormon the latter having been completed recently at a cost of and ia a credit to the latter day saints of our prosperous utah cities cannot boast of one its equal tha temple of honor hall is fitted with a handsome theatrical stage and a capacious hall where the jubilant youth with his buxom partner not barring the weather beaten seniors mingle in alio whirl of the merry dance the great political campaign is over and the fire is already slumbering in adliss alas for the rarity of christian charity many a lofty aspirant whose heart heat high with brilliant prospects now sits mournfully in the chimney corner sighing a requiem ever his fallen hopes of all sad words of tongue or pen the saddest are these it might however sad their seeming fate these mourners have one consolation in knowing that many an opponent was missing alter the battle though his direct antagonist cops gloat over a special victory the bbate is pretty well divided though the republicans claim moat of the fat dishes the rumor ia allott now that the county election waa illegal and a new one will be called for november the proper time if so the fire will soon be kindled anew wyoming now become a state until the cormons mormons have lost the balance of power by or other means she will then he rushed in with loud acclamations what justice jus tico and still we talk of equality of rights and such wyoming ia at years behind butali in many respects at least in these parts education ia huwe vcr receiving more attention than theretofore and ere long will work a reformation we can but expect therefore to find much ignorance and nesa there are exceptions to this rule for we have met many people of culture with characters unimpeachable until better influences are spread amone the people to counteract and soften down the coarse and vulgar a refined society will be unknown we remember and not many when its counterpart could be found in most any country town of utah but all honor to that noble B Y academy whose elevating influences have been shed abroad through all the land and i will cro long its thriving branches cast a light of true education into the home of every latter
