BELLE FOUND INNOCENT OF BASEBALL GAMBLING: An investigation into the gambling habits 0£ Chicago White Sox slugger Albert Belle has turned up no evidence he bet on baseball or participated in any activity that should result in suspension, according to a published report. The report has been passed on to league lawyers and to the players union. Kevin Hallinan, baseball's executive director of security and managem ent, spent about 14 months investigating Belle after the player admitted to gambling losses in a deposition taken for a civil lawsuit that has since been settled. In the deposition, Belle admitted losing $40,000 while gambling on pro and college football and basketball games. He denied ever betting on baseball, which could have landed him a lifetime ban. MUTOMBO VOTED N.B.A'S BEST DEFENSEMAN: Dikembe Mutombo of the Atlanta Hawks was selected yesterday as the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year for a record third time. Mutombo, who also won the award in 1996-97 and 1994-95, received 39 of a possible 116 votes from a panel of sports writers and broadcasters. Gary Payton of the SuperSonics, the 1995-96 winner, Dikembe finished second with 37 votes and San Mutombo Antonio's David Robinson was third with 10 votes. Mutombo led Atlanta to a 50-32 record by anchoring a defense that ranked fourth in blocked shots, eighth in points allowed, and 11th in field goal percentage. Mutombo finished second in the NBA in blocked shots with 3.38 per game ·and fourth in rebounds with 11.4. He has 2,027 blocks for his career, tied with Larry Nance for 10th place in NBA !:}story.
