West fligh School choir member Rachel Bauchman has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review the dismissal of her suit claiming her choir director promoted Mormonism in his classroom. She contends the 10th U.S. Circuit Cohrt of Appeals, in rejecting her appeal of a lower court ruling, imposed impossibly strict standards of proof that her First Amendment rights were violated. Bauchman's April 28 petition asks the high court to review the 2-1 December ruling by the 10th Circuit that West High School officials and choir director Richard Torgerson did not violate her rights by requiring her to sing Christian songs as part of the a cappella choir's repertoire. Bauchman, who is Jewish, contended that Torgerson had for years sought to impose his Mormon beliefs.
