it a settle menton chalk creek millard county when only 82 22 years old he be was called and set apart by president B young as bishop of fulmore fillmore which position be held 6 years in 1861 he was released from hit his office as bishop and called upon a ml mission masilon silon to the unite states returning from his mission he was called by the i hurch burch authorities to fill the import early youth and at the age of 9 years ears he wa left to take care of himself as best t he be could he hired out to farmers for whom he worked until ho he was 20 years old eld and at a plowing match when he was 19 won tie first prize a silver medal among 30 or 40 other contestants wages being very low for farm work he went to work at railroad railroading n chiefly tunnelling tun nelling in 1846 he be married christine jousts by whom he had bad eight children th ildren two of whom died in infancy he settled down in bonese where tie he worked in the coal an and it ironstone mines till 1856 he states in his bis own biography that he expected to he be a christian and used to go to church hut but never could understand the doctrines advocated voca ted his first two children were sprinkled about this time lie he first heard the gospel prea preached clied by ders traveling in that vicinity and shortly after this got work in an ironstone mine where working when he be heard the principles awl 1849 8 0 bp by elder robert bobert brown and confirmed by elder john russell kussell his wife was baptized b vel t zed the following lowing fel jan uary he was ordained a the of june and held the office of a priest for some time lime was ordained an elder the day of march 1855 in 1856 he removed to bathgate branch over which he be presided for two years and until he re moved bick to boness in 1860 when the branch of aque binesa wa reorganized and he be waa I 1 president which position beheld till til he be emigrated to utah in june 1864 he emigrated with his family to america on the ship hudson froni from london and landed in new york after a six weeks and three days passage across the atlantic traveled Trave lei leol by steamer up the hudson io 10 albiny albany and from thence by rail to st joseph and fiam there by steamer to the town of wyoming nib neb and from thence by ox team to salt lake his cifes health was very poor or on board the ship and she me was not able to stand the fatigue of the journey and gradually grew weaker cantil antil she died on the of september 1864 she was buried about 00 miles east of salt lake near a place called farr halleck she was a faithful latter day saint and died in full assurance ot of a glorious resurrection he be was now left alone with a family of six small children on his hands that wanted the tender care of a mother but trusting in god to open the way he knew that lie he would never suffer him to want he arrived in salt lake city the 3 th day of october 1 54 and settled in west weber weber county where he has been an ai active member officiating as a teacher in the ward till to he was called to a assist in the bishopric in 1866 he be married ruth kuth chandler by whom he be had one child she died in 1872 the ath of march 1868 he was called to preside ovee ove the elders quorum of the west weber ward which position jie he held for nearly nine mine years with credit to himself and benefit to tile hie quorum january ad 1873 he married mary S Nall kemi or cr who died january wl 1831 by her lie he had tour four chil children drou july 3rd ard 1876 lie he married 59 sarah r ah survives him by whom he had
