Show ROADS OF SALT LAKE COUNTY BEING BROU BROUGHT HT TO T HIS T-HIS HIS illustration shows what has been accomplished in Salt Lake county during the last I 1 summer in in the go good d' d roads campaign About twenty-three twenty miles of this type of road has be been n constructed I r 41 4 v l k t 1 t s. s H. H T Within the next two weeks providing providing providIng pro pro- viding weather conditions are favorable favorable favorable favora favora- ble the 1915 1916 road toad work campaign in Salt Lake county wilt will have been brought to a close More than three miles of concrete highway will have been constructed and about thirty miles mlles of macadam roadway Figures will show I believe says County Road Supervisor up Holmberg Homberg that more permanent work has been done this year and andor for comp comparatively less mone money than has been the case in preceding years Raising the wage of ot men employed ed o on the work In my opinion has been responsible i in great measure for this showing Ear Early in July the county commissioners commis commis- commisSioners upon the recommendation of the road supervisor voted to increase the daily wage from 2 to Of the 01 or more laborers who have b been en on on the pay roll of the roads department department de de- de of the county nearly every one is a resident of or the h county and not a few are taxpayers ayers After watching the work worle for tor a number of da days s 's I was Impressed with the idea that these men would do doore more ore work and spend less time leanIng leaning lean lean- Ing on their pick and shovel handles if they l laro-ar- laro n I orP r UT ra ra 4 h county counts c commissioners o ag agreed d' d with me The result has been more than satisfying for the county has saved saied money by the move When the news of the advance reached the men a greater greater- amount of en energy erg was disPlayed displayed dis dis- us- us played by almost every man on the different Jobs The small advance in wage was more than offset by the greater amount of ot ground covered The taxpayers ers had been unable to se secure se- se secure cure other employment and I l know now of a number of cases where the work enabled them to save their homes for which they had worked many years Three Miles of Concrete About three miles of concrete starting from the North Murray limIts lim lim- its on Main 1 street to Thirteenth South street will be finished freezIng freez freez- I ing weather interferes in the next two weeks About one abe and one-half one miles is Is' Is done but this stretch will not be he open for travel until the en entire entire en- en tire distance of about three miles has been completed The concrete roadway is sixteen feet teet wide beginning at the edge of the street car track track tra k and is banked on the gutter side with six feet of ot macadam The macadam Is used for turnouts and as an aid to drainage from the street surface Results Are re Good I The methods methods of of jf curing tile the ce cement ce- ce ment is a tedious one but the tha results I ce-I elsewhere show that it has hag its ad ad- I vantages in that cement when so treated will last under the pressure of heavy travel for lor twenty years or or more As fast as the cement is laid dirt in blocks sixteen feet square is piled plied about it water to the depth of about six inches is run over the surface and allowed to stand for a period of ten days The water acts as 55 a perfect blanket excluding all air from froni the cement and at the same time maintaining a fairly even tem tern The treatment precludes all possibility of the cement cracking cracking crack crack- ing and makes an absolutely impervious imper imper- base The remaining stretch necessary to complete the Main street work a distance dis dis- dia- dia tance of ot about four miles will be he started weather permitting about the middle of next March and sho should ld be completed it is estimated about the middle of September The reconstruction of ot about ty seven miles of of dirt road in other sections of of the county has about reached the final stage In the Murray Murray Mur Mur- ray and Holliday districts about fourteen four four- fourteen teen miles niles of this class of road has been built this summer and is at this time in almost perfect condition Slag and quartzite have been used freely as a base with a surface of silica The county has large silica beds in Big Cottonwood and the cost of this material has been confined to haulage and distribution The percentage of cost for tor quartzite quartz- quartz ite ito when used as a base has run higher tl than an slag but inasmuch as it more easily adjusts Itse Itself to a firm base the Increase I in cost has been warranted Th The slag has been secured from the smelters at Murray but there have been times when this supply was as exhausted and in order to carry on the work without t interruption Interruption Inter inter- the stone was resorted to Men with with he heavy vy hammers broke the rock rock until It was in in shape to be he handled bandied by the two steam rollers 0 O s 6 The wage of ot the hammer cr crew w brought up the cost of this material Traffic Is Heavy The road between Murray and Big Cottonwood has been and will continue continue continue con con- to be a thorn in the side of the county commissioners until some other oth oth- er r f route toute ute is secured for hauling ore ore j from the mines and supplies supplies' from I town The heavy output of the mines in hi Big Cottonwood is almost entirely handled by wagon and the constant traffic that goes on day and night cuts the road into ribbons ns in spite of repair work woric Pleasure travel trAvel to Brighton has has' been almost entirely shut off oft this summer says Supervisor Holmberg and as development lat at the mines mine mine continues it is more evident each d day that some other route will have to tobe tobe tobe be selected before another season rolls around One of the most beautiful beautiful beautiful beau beau- spots in all Utah is practically cut off for tor tourists but the mines have hare got to take care of their out put I It has been suggested that a new road to Brighton be made by way of Mill Ull Creek and over Little Water vater to the s nic resort The county count surveyor will probably be instructed before snow flies t tc to togo go over this proposed route and make a preliminary preliminary nary survey Such a road would be beabout beabout beabout about two miles shorter than the I present one and the bly less hess It is estimated that tI the e road can be constructed with ut any hea heavy y expense The tourist tr travel yel to Brighton has been so light this year that the resort haS hardly pal pall paid pallex ex ex- ex Many Roads Need Need Care Salt Lake county has at this time about odd miles mIles' of road that must be cared for and as the county commissioners commissioners' are of the opinion that good roads ar are one of the greatest assets of any community it is their intention to better the conditions of these highways Just as fast as funds on hand wilt will permit On One annual source of expenditure that is a great annoyance to the board boar is that for upkeep and Installation in installation
