Show Mantl Messenger, Snow faculty members use retreat well Twenty five members of the Snow College teaching stafTfeel their retreat to Fish Lake was both fun and very positive and productive. During the first week of September the faculty members took some of their own time and attended a retreat at the Fish Lake Lodge. The retreat was directed by Dr. David Gottshall of the College of DuPage in Illinois who is founding director of the National Great Teachers Seminar. Dr. Gottshalls philosophy is that no outside consultant or expert knows as much about teaching as a room full of twenty five people who have devoted their lives to the profession. In an approach he calls structured shoptalk, Dr. Gottshall first set up his minimal rigid structure" (no griping, no pointless war stories, no time wasted on problems beyond our ability to solve) and then encouraged teachers to share both their challenges and their successes. The result was a celebration of great teaching. All the teachers who completed the experience felt it was one of the most positive faculty development exercises Thursday, September 19, 1991 Page 8 Manti Elementary School Positive Action Students of the Week they had ever had. As one teacher said, We dont need anyone from the outside to tell us what to do. We have all the expertise we need if we just have a way to share it around. Many of the teachers who could not attend the September retreat have requested that another be held soon. If all goes well, the experience will be repeated Thanksgiving the Break in during November. Dr. Bottshall has further encouraged Snow College to host a future Intermountain Great Teachers Seminar for college teachers throughout the region and possibly a Secondary Great Teachers Seminar for High School teachers in our area. Positive Action Students of the Week are Robert Brandt and Tony Estrada.
