Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Opinion WEDNESDAY JANUARY 31, 2001 Dixie Speaks SUN It's with sadness that I tell readers that long-tim- e feature writer Barb Pyles has decided to retire. I delayed writing anything in hopes she'd have a change of heart and realize that the long hours, late nights of writing and low pay were really things she couldn't live without.. .but it didn't happen. Heaven knows, it's not that she hasn't tried before. She's attempted to retire at least three other times, but relented when I pitched a fit and clung to her leg as she tried walking out the door. Barb Pyles has a gift of fletching out a good feature story. I thought occasionally that she'd have a real struggle with some of her subjects, but it never happened. Barb is a positive person who has the wonderful ability to see something unique and special in everyone she interviews. It's a gift we all could use. With her growing knowlege of the Internet, she would research subjects she was writing about, often going way behind her job. Besides being our writer, Barb has been a good friend. After my mom (Ruthie) died, she became an important confidant, who I have relied on for feedback, encouragement and on occasion, gentle criticism. Barb and husband Jim have been such good citizens with their church involvement and helping countless people throughout the community. They are just plain, good people, the kind I'm honored to know. would like to say thanks to Barb, and wish her a relaxing retirement. I hope that she'll still write for us occasionally. Every once in a while in life, we are blessed with the presence of a really good person and friend. Thanks Barb, for being that to us. We'll miss you.
