Echohawk, who is one of the founding members of the Native American Rights Fund, spoke on the current issues facing Native Americans in this country. realized the need for Native Americans to have lawsuits and litigations that required money to hire lawyers. Because Native Americans were "the poorest of poor," and could not afford lawyers, the Native American Rights Fund (NARF) was instigated, and Echohawk has been serving on it since its birth. Echohawk outlined the basic priorities of the NARF and the need to help protect the three million Native Americans in the United States and their rights. They want to help preserve the two percent of American land that still belongs to the Native Americans, and help the United States understand that the "responsibility to hold the land is a trust, and that the U.S. government is a trustee."
