Show RAILWAY TRUST SUIT SETTLED WASHINGTON July 18 R 4 An antitrust suit against the Association As As- of American Railroads and member companies was settled Friday by a consent decree de- de cree which the justice department department department depart depart- ment said was expected to restore restore restore re store the individual railroads freedom of ot action to enter into direct transportation arrangements arrangements arrangements arrange arrange- ments with motor carriers The decree was signed by Judge J. J Laws in the federal district court for the District District District Dis Dis- of Columbia Filed October 25 1939 the suit was based on a resolution adopted by the A A R in June 1937 which said in part that it was not de desirable desirable desirable de- de for the rail carriers to enter into joint billing arrangements arrangements arrangements arrange arrange- ments with motor carriers The TheA A AAR A R subsequently rescinded the resolution and sought unsuccessfully unsuccessfully unsuccessfully fully to have the suit dismissed The government had charged that the railroads refused to establish rates on loaded trucks trailers and truck bodies and re refused refused refused re- re fused to establish through rates joint rates and fares and joint billing arrangements with motor carriers all for the purpose of eliminating carrier service |
