Show BEYOND CAMPUS 5 JOIN A ROLLER LOCAL ROLLER DERBY The Derby Depot is home to one of Salt Lake Citys most hardThe Wasatch hitting Roller Derby. Wasatch Roller Derby is Utahs premier roller derby league and consists of three home teams that compete in Utah and one international travel team. This year, their travel team was ranked 31 out of 300 teams in the world. The derby is a part of the Wasatch Womens Club, a nonprofit organization formed in Salt Lake City, Utah. The league uses the sport of roller derby as a means to fundraise and raise awareness for charitable organizations. The founders of the Wasatch Roller Derby recently announced that they would be removing themselves from the league, and that they will not be renewing the lease for the Derby Depot. The Derby Depot hosts practices, games and tournaments for Wasatch Roller Derby as well as members of their derby non-profi- ts, family that consists of the Uinta Madness mens league, Red Rockettes recreational league, the Red Rockets male and female juniors league, and the Ladies of the Lake Roller Derby. these Now leagues are joining efforts to raise the money needed totaling $7,000 to keep their home. A strong fan base and donations are needed to keep roller derby alive in Salt Lake. CHECK IT OUT The Derby Depot is located at 1415 S and 700 W in Salt Lake City. The womens season just ended, but players are still working hard and practicing for next year. On mondays, students can watch the mens league and womens league scrimmage against each other. Uinta MadnessUtahs only mens roller derby league and brother league to Wasatch Roller Derby, are currently ranked 24 in the country. DERBY TEAM Wasatch Roller Derby is able to put students in touch with someone who will work with them to teach them how to play roller derby. When I first started derby, I didnt know what I was doing, said Jennifer Jessop, business major and jammer for the Salt Flat Fallouts, a Wasatch roller derby team. I was reckless. But after practicing and getting help from other members, I went from being reckless to Wreckless. Now Jessop goes by Wreckless. This is another feature of the sport. All players are encouraged to pick a nickname for themselves. The player is then referred to by whatever nickname they chose. Wasatch roller derby is available to help members and those interested to improve their individual athletic ability, and character. Together, the leagues strive to provide a supportive space for women to excel in their one-on-o- ne self-discipli- ne individual successes and in a team environment. I started roller derby because I was in a bad needed and marriage to occupy my something time, said Rebecca Kirk, jammer for the Hot Wheelers, a Wasatch roller derby team. Once I started playing, I felt this boost of confidence and made awesome life-lofriends doing it. Kirks trademark for bout is tire wearing every tracks down her face and neck. She said she thought of this idea because she plays for the Hot Wheelers. Jessops trademark is wearing gold flakes on her face, like in Goldschlager bottles. Roller derby is a sport that allows players to be creative and express themselves. Home team girls love to have fun with it, Jessop said. We like to do our makeup, and e eryone likes to get all sexy. ng VOLUNTEER You dont have to be a skater or a player to participate in the roller derby, Kirk said. Wasatch roller derby recruits dedicated officials and volunteers to help every season.
