Samuel L: Preston East Carbon Team Retires After 55 Years In Mine Shows At State Tourney Good Sarrme1 L. Preston, one of the really old pioneers of the East Carbon area, marked another milestone in his colorful life on August 4 when he retired after 43 years as a coal minej with the Utah Fuel company. Mr. Preston, better known as Sam to his hundreds of friends in Sunnyside, started working in the mines at the ripe old age of 12 in a shaft mine in Ryhape, Durham county, England. And this was the start of a career which was to. last, for 55 years in coal mines on two sides of the earth. Sam was born in Mur ton, England, in 1881 and while still a boy, started work in the coal mines near his home, Sam married in 1903 and three years later he and his young wife, Marion, decided to leave the old mines of England in quest of a better life on this side of the ocean. Sam and Marion came straight to Sunnyside upon arriving in the United States and he took a job with the , Utah Fuel company. And from that time until now, with the exception of two years when he worked at in 1909-1- 0 Winter Quarters for Utah Fuel, they have made their home here. Sam is one of the most well known and liked men in Sunnyside and he has served that town in the capacity of justice of the the past 14 years. peace-fo- r When the old gentleman walked from the mine and hung up his equipment for the last time it marked the end of a career Which included fire boss, face boss, hoistman and practically any other job you can name in connection with mining the black The East Carbon boys made an excellent showing at the recent Legion tournament. These were the words voiced by Coach Pres Summerhays after he had returned from the meet where his squad won the opening game but lost their next two in the quest for state honors. Several unavoidable factors were prominent in our getting beat in the last two games. Of course that is baseball but I still think our team was good as anv in the tournament, Pres went on to say. One of the big things that count- ed heavily against the East Carbon squad was the lack of first line substitutes. The locals only had ten men that saw considerable action in the tourney. The wre decidedly tired after the first strenuous game with Cyprus and some reliable substitutes would have aided their cause greatly. East Carbon also sported the youngest team in the meet and the lack of experience showed up when the boys became tense in the electrified atmosphere of a state meet and made countless bobbles of sure out balls. Pres also was quick to add that Carl Poglajen pitched a good game and that it was no fault of his that Brigham City scored 14 runs in the first inning of the second game. Brigham did not get one solid hit from him in that inning but did all of their scoring on East Carbon errors and several fluke singles. Darryl Crawford led all batters for the tournament with 10 hits in 14 official times at bat, which is a good average in any league. We dont have any kick coming, added Pres, We had a lot of fun and feel that we ably represented this district. gold.
