Show MAY YET HAVE CHANCE TO WORK ON KAIBAB lu in range improvement work during I 1 the past winter the forest service hired men from rr om both 1 Fre re donla donta and chanab kanab the numbers were about 41 men front aiom arizona and about abon t 29 from utah working on 11 the kaib kaibab a it national forest the te P public bile works act p provides that preference shall be given to citizens of the county and state in which the work Is being done A protest was submitted to washington officials against employing utah citizens on arizona projects As s a result of this protest the forest ores t supervisor was as instructed eni to discontinue employment of uta utah 1 I 1 c citizens on the kalbak national tion al forest the kanab lions club took the matter up through utah senators and r representatives e presenta tives and asked that the interpretations of the provisions of tile the P W A be modified to permit the residents of kanab to work on tile the kalbac national forest the lions club gave as their reasons for this request that the community adjacent to the kalbak has two little towns fredonia Fre donla with people and nan kan nab ab with 1200 people the pioneer settlement in this country was in kanab and later fredonia Pre donla was settled by relatives i ot of the kanab I 1 pioneers pione eis both kanab and fredonia Fre donla are lial in the barn same e com community m unity and their interests tore ts are id identical en kanab residents have grazed on the kaibab mountain and around it tor for ym years r 8 and years men alen hired b by y the forest service for improvement work on the kaibab have come from both kanab and fre donla ever since the area has been a national forest living conditions are thought by some to be a a little better in kanaet kanab because of the tact fact that there is more loriga lon ion water and be because ca us e drinking i i water la Is piped to to town wn from mountain springs it so happens that the state line between arizona and utah runs between tho the two towns and kanab Is ahr three ee and one halt half miles within the boundary ot of utah kanab residents own agrest a great many cattle and sheep that run on the arizona ranges and many it rin A have bave h hait iier eads lu la arizona ata lab iab men spend a lot of time in ln inari ari ri r zona pay a lot ot of taxes there but because be cauce their families alv live in ka nab are not technically arizona residents kanab men feel that they have interests and should have preferences in arizona in and around the kaibab Natio national forest in past years the forest service has not shown favoritism in hiring men or in buying supplies and has given each town an equal opportunity the latest information received Is that the secretary of ag agriculture kicul has appealed to the public works board to interpret the regulations I 1 so that residents lesl dents of kanab willbe will be considered for work on the kaibab halbak national forest it Is hoped and believed by the lions club that a favorable decision will be given |
