The lake is missingw ater inid continues to do so and the Me of loss has been fairly o er the last 20 months con-jjgte- nt s. jiHl-12cf- Power has conducted tech studies which high that the lake sits on tw o Wilts of water bearing strata. A dye test was conducted and the dye hasn't surfaced as of xet. Tritium testing in the mine workings was also conducted with the theory being if tritium is not found in the water sample then the w ater has never been to the surface in recent history. T ritium beinga byproduct of the atomic bomb and present in JNfurface water since the first atomic bomb was unleashed C-Ut- ah con-fijsn- ed The initial tritium samples showed a .017 leel of tritium and other samples indicate lex- el$ of 1 0 and 1.7. Burton isn't htire if the increase in tritium Uimcentrations is statistically I significant. Utah Power contin 1 ; minimum stream flow from 15 cfs to 0 cfs to keep Electric Lake from being totally drained. As ues to look at solutions, a bentonite lining or a rubber lining hae been considered but not deemed feasible. There may neer be a long-tersolution Maybe when the mining discontinues and the regional ground water table reaches equilibrium will be the best fix. but that could take sex eral years. The question is how to keep the Huntington Plant in operation for the 2003-0- 4 season, said Burton. Electric Lake at full capacity holds 30,000 acre feet of wTater The plant needs 12,000 acre feet of water to remain in operation. In February and March Electric-Lakonly held 4,000 acre feet of water. The company took action to remedy their situation 8,500 acre feet of water from the Huntington Cleveland Irrigation Company. They also it sits today, Electric Lake stored more than was anticipated Burton stressed the most important thing to them was ensuring the Huntington Plant would continue to operate. Another goal of Utah Power is to get the James Cany on well number three operating which will put another 1 cfs back into the lake. He oiced the need for that water to remain in the Hunting-to- n drainage. Eight thousand gallons per minute is still going Perron Irrigation Companies, but didnt end up leasing from them because it looked like Hunter Plant would hax e an adequate supply to get through this year and into 2004. The 8,500 acre feet will come from the reservoirs on the left fork of Huntington Canyon. Other measures taken were to reduce the a hole on the dam that w ent doxx n 30 feet with water in it Water m e looked at Cottonwood and 1 out Eccles Cany on These are big issues, water rights and transbasin dixersion issues and the xxater rights ot the irrigation company must be addressed. Hood records ol stream flow s are crucial in prox ing and documenting what is really going on. Burton explained a situation they had in 1975 when they had Electric Lake in Huntington Photos by Sharree Jensen Canyon. the reserxoir there doesn't appear to be any feasible fixes. We w ill keep w orking, but there are no easy answers, said Burton. Craig Johansen mentioned that Canyon Fuel had announced they w ill idle the mine the second quarter of 200 1. The diflerenee w as pointed out that w ith the mine being idled and not shut doxx n the mine w ould need to maintain pumps and equipment The question was also brought up as tow hether or not the Dix ision of Oil, Gas and Mining would inxoke any water re- -- was piping under the dam through lissures in the bedrock which resulted in material being scoured out of the center of the dam and it took one million bags of grout at that time to fix the problem With these two faults discoxered farther up in placement laws. Burton also commented on the wild and scenic rixers saying that Huntington Creek is a totally controlled fixer and the llow is regulated by Electric Lake and the Left Fork Reser-xoirHe stressed a wild and scenic designation could potentially prohibit any flirt her along the creek and to be aware of and study the situation with great concern. s. dexel-opmo- nt Amana9 Easy Reach Plus' Refrigerator 8 5 cu ft Capacity 1 Adjustable Glass Shelves VI ,, SMI & Door Buckets Door Storage Gallon-Plu- s 649 ana MODEL DRB1901C Amana9 Side-By-Si- Refrigerator de 25 6 cu ft Capcity JElectric Lake is at approximately 30 percent of full capacity at this time.
