Show PAGE 30 THE ZEPHYRMARCH 1992 feedback the readers respond Dear Mr. Stiles (or do readers get to call you Jim?), After reading (most of) the LAME ISSUE, I thought maybe I should put on paper a list of some of the things and people I'd like to read about, in case you'd consider any of them as a means of providing more variety for the Zephyr's content I'm not even going to attempt to organize it Forgive me if I mention anything you'd already covered before I moved to Moab. --The Arts, Moab-styl- e: I don't mean U. of U.'s defunct program, but all the amazing stuff going on locally. The community theater group, how (and through whom) Moab Public Radio came to be, Castle Valley Academy's excellent choir, Allan Lee's music and drama program at the high school, Belinda Oliver's ballet program at "Dance, Etc," (I don't know of a better one south of Provo), Susan Miller, whos built a school and community string music program from ( is that a person?), "house painter illusionist (what kind of illusions?), Oieh nothing, dream is to make enough money by selling his mobiles to visit the Ukraine ( the whose Lysiak, "homeland" where he's never set foot), which has been known to float harpsichords down the Colorado, whoever came up with the idea of having art displays at the post office, the bands that play at all the eat & drink spots, etc. Renee Ruth at the Travel Council office has a list of about 150 Moabites who make at least 80 of their income through an art form. Some of the Arts Council's new ideas, including a junk sculpture am test, a film classics and foreign films series, an "artists alliance, "an endowment to provide funding, and finding ways to get the local arts scene into the local news... -I- nteresting people and projects, such as: Donna Crah, who coordinated this year's annual bird count, Tom Kuehne and Triends of Moab," Nicholas Brown, Lisa Wolfson, etc. of Canyonlands Community Recycling ( and how foe whole thing got going), Hugh Glass, who has (Grand County's sole source big plans and a strong sense of responsibility as owner of Diana of public transportation), Will Petty of "Technica Pacifica", Messick, principal of the Middle s School, who,-- apparently a genius at finding funding, the Canyonlands Llamas and their keepers, foe Center Cafe's owner-che- f, individual staff members at Canyonlands Field Institute and Association.... Natural Canyonlands History Positive stuff!!! How about "Environmental Excellence" awards to local people your staff feels are doing something right? Or another column, "Common Ground," or "Beyond Labels", to locate and expose what your writers continually call for--a shared base of understanding Constructive and feasible suggestions for between polarized elements of foe community? improving life in Moab, such as Delores Butcher's goal of having the city provide catalytic converters to people willing to pay for them in monthly installments ( they not only cut the pollution dramatically but also halve foe consumption of wood). Maybe just some brief responses to questions like "What's the best thing about life in Moab?" Don't get me wrong, I enjoy reading the Zephyr thoroughly, but sometimes it seems like Moab consists of a handful of people dealing with a handful of issues, rather than the amazing conglomeration that it is. up Tag-Alon- g, on-goi- ng 259-TA- Sincerely, Sheila Gill Dear Jim, . Incredible! Just incredible! Of all the scenarios I have dreamt of to eliminate that concrete plug in foe Colorado River, I have never considered sloughing of foe sandstone banks. There are, however, still some points left out of Thomas Budlong's report, "the collapse of Glen ' Canyon Dam". The rapidness of the drawdown of the reservoir caused rapidly varied plug flow in all of foe side canyons. The flow velocities were high enough to cause all sediment that had been deposited in these canyons between foe level of the breach and foe maximum pool elevation to be suspended and washed out with the flood. Campers in Coyote Gulch reported that the lower canyon of foe Escalante River was clean several miles below foe confluence. After the Bureau drew the reservoir below the breach, subsequent flood events washed more sediment from the side canyons. Even the Glen Canyon above foe remaining pool was stabilizing with some remaining silt forming beaches on terraces above the river. Some cottonwood trees, but more tamarisk was observed being established on foe terraces. There were additional strange sightings near the former reservoir. I hear that foe ghost of Ed Abbey was seen sailing down. It is also possible that his ghost was seen hovering over the banks before foe failure. It could be that Ed has something to do these days other than explore foe Cabeza Prieta. Sincerely, Tom Myers Editors note: While it is the policy of this paper to avoid editing the comments of readers who express their opinions on this page (in this case, in the form of a cartoon), it should be made clear that the Zephyr in no way supports discrimination against any bald person, male or female. J.S. Mr. Stiles;, B. Stout here. My humblest possible Greetings, Zephyrees and Zephyr ettes-Ni- ck While to for sooner. not written forcing a route through particularly you apologies having recalcitrant country, my upper lip became so stiff that I was unable to dictate a coherent dispatch (my body mike records logistical data "in situ" as I trek, along with any encountered remarks which might interest foe proper authorities). Luckily for us all, repeated stiff shots from my flask scotch finally saved the day. I have quite a sentimental attachment to that flask; of single-ma- lt foe just imagine sights that it has seen, the places it has been: tucked under my arm, strapped to my leg, slipped under my pillow, secreted in my custom-mad-e kryptonite ba depack.. ..ah, the memories overwhelm me. But I digress. Fellow backpackers, an issue of no small magnitude demands our attention, farces each of us to "trek" deeply into our respective consciences. We must finally ask ourselves, "What have I done to enhance the public lands?" For far too long we have been freeloaders who pay no fees, ' perform no functions. The record speaks for itself, and it's a sad and sorry indictment Even hunters and fishermen at least purchase licenses. They also construct water catchments, stock lakes and streams with proper fish, and generally look after these species which have a proven ability to furnish some fun while generating revenue and tasting good. Yes, even the sportsmen can hold their heads high; shouldn't we as least aspire to such modest achievements? But of course our real challenge comes when we consider foe miners, ranchers, loggers, oil companies, military forces, dambuilders and tourism expediters. It's easy to fed impotent in company such at times. But we can better oursdves, we must as this; I myself have been driven to take steps to join ranks with these yeomen. Backpackers, awaken! Go out and make it a good day, a good land! By now you're probably thinking, "OK Nick, you talk big, but what have you yourself done to bridge this gap, and how can we emulate you?" Let me give you just one example.
