In Par-OffNew Zealand, JEditor Independent. In the publication of a previous letter, let-ter, I noticed an error in which it was noted that the steamship 'Mariposa' was sunk on Oct. 20, 1884. It was the 'Wairarapa,' the date Oct, 29th. In my travels among the Maori people peo-ple of this land I have found many of them to be very superstioiis. They be j licve strongly in supernatural beings and will scarce ever venture out after dark alone for fear of seeing a ghost, or 'taepo.' There are many places which they hold sacred and where ;iione of them will venture except the chiefs or others high in authority. At KawhU. a place about fifty miles from here, situated on the West coast , is '.i place marked by two stones, which is said to be the landing place of the first five canoes that came from Hawaii mauy years ago. The place is considered to be 'tapee' or holy, and the Maoris will not occupy the ground nor remove trees from there for fear .of being overtaken by some terrible evil. In a visit to that place In March last, myself aud companions were shown the place and allowed to go there, as we were white men and their sorcerers have no power over us, This place is called 'Taitiui,' meaning mean-ing 'great seawaters,' which is also given as the name of the canoe which landed there. The Maoris have recently re-cently erected a large house adjoining adjoin-ing this place to which they have also giveu the same name. The house will be formally opened for use in September, Septem-ber, at which time the king, Mahuta, is expected to be there and of course they are looking forward to having a grand time, and feasting and speech-making speech-making will be the principal features ,of the occasion. Speaking of the king it may not be .out of the way to stato that his headquarters head-quarters are in the Waikato district at a settlement called 'Paruwhare.' In a conference with his chiefs recently re-cently held he asked his followers to cease working on the Sabbath, a practice prac-tice quite common among them, but whether they will cease or not remains to be seen. He is not of a religious nature, and when asked by my companion com-panion the privilege of explaining the Gospel to him, be stated that he had no time to listen to us. oThe country over which I am traveling travel-ing is very rough and broken and many of the roads are simply mountain moun-tain trails cut through heavy timber and thick brush. I am enjoying myself my-self very much, and, considering the change of climate, and the great amount of rain we have here, my health is very good. Wishing The Independent every success, I remain, Very respectfully, P. A. Waters, ygaruawabla, Waikato, N. Z, Aug. 19, '06. There Is one medicine which every family should be provided with. We refer to Chamberlain' Pain Balm. Wtaea It is kept at hand the severe pain of a burn or scald may be promp-l.y promp-l.y re'leved and the sore healed in much less time than when medicine has to be sent for. A sprain may be Tjromntly treated before inflamation sets in, which insures a cure in about one-third the time otherwise required Cuts and bruises should receive immediate im-mediate attention, before the parts become swollen and when Chamber-Iain's Chamber-Iain's Pain Balm is applied it will heal them without matter being formed, and without leaving a scar. A sore throat may be cured In one night. A piece of flannel dampened with this liniment and bound on over the seat or pain, will cure lame back or pain in tbe side of the chest io twenty-four hours. It is tbe most valuable, however, how-ever, for rheumatism. Persons afflicted afflict-ed with this disease will be delighted with tbe prompt relief from pain which it affords, and it can be depended depend-ed upon to effect a complete cure.
