"I find wine drinkers to be more well-traveled, more knowledgeable and more well-read," says Dallett. "And that's part of the fabric of Park City." Dallett points out her store does not follow a trend. In fact, she can think of only three other stores in America thai have thought to sell wine'alongside books. "'Ilial is not to say that wine is the focus," Dallett amends. "Books are the focus and wine is the complement. You do not need to be reading a book to have a glass of wine and you do not need to have a glass of wine to read a book. The wine is meant to be the accent." Named after the endangered species of 'Hie Swaner Nature Preserve. Dallett would like her bookstore. 'Hie Spotted Frog, to be a community gathering space. "Park City is an environmental community. When I was choosing a name, I wanted something that combined the awareness of nature with the awareness of literature." she explains, "so I looked east to the nature preserve." Dallelt perceives a strong analogy between the spotted frog's endangered status and independent bookstores. The Redstone Village could have chosen to employ a larger national chain store for books, but instead saw the potential for Dallels unique store. "Independent bookstores are being replaced by larger chains, so I was grateful when Redstone gave me the square footage necessary to bring in all ihe titles I wanted," she says. "I love the stores that arc opening up around me. All of the owners have great pride in their businesses.'" Dallett also has a myriad of events planned that range from documentary screenings to Scrabble tournaments to readings and discussions by accomplished authors-n feature of her store made possible by her involvement with Sundance's Tree Room Author Series. Dwelling on the East ("oast for most of her adult life, Dallett recalls traveling 21 days of the month for her work as a design and marketing director. After 9/11. she decided to move west to Idaho to do something she would be passionate about on a rainy day. Park City was originally intended to be a short visit along the way. *4I was going to stay for five days of Sundance, when people at Sundance told me not to leave. They said, "stay-we need your energy here.' So I worked wilh Sundance Village to bring in authors to speak. I've never had so much fun. Robert Red ford and Ray Grant tell me to go shopping and find authors. Its just a blast." she beams. Without Sundance and Red ford. Dallett acknowledges, authors and personalities like Howard Dean. Jimmy Carter, and Al Franken would' never travel to Utah for a visit. "I opened because of the support of Sundance Village." she says. "When authors sell out at Sundance we had nowhere to take the overflow. Authors can have a second event here. We have the capacity lo welcome 220 people for one reading." "Park City, Dallett believes. makes for the perfect setting for her eclectic vision. She describes the town as "a town of culture, knowledge and change" and "a town that is both edgy and irreverent" anil when she felt the pulse of the community, she thought her storcwoukl be an excellent extension of the towns personality. "Park City is industrial Ralph Lauren." she says, "and 1 tried to incorporate that when I designed my store. I chose everything about this place down lo the last book.
