Show I f i Matilda inters Pioneer of 1848 Dies at Her Home Mrs Matilda Duncan Winters 96 a Bountiful pioneer of 1849 and believed to be the oldest resident of Davis count county died Sunday nf- nf afternoon af afternoon at her home in Bountiful I of ailments incident to a age e She had been confined to her bed 15 weeks retaining her keen mind until her death Mrs Winters was horn born April 25 1836 in Belleville Ill a daugh dRug daughter daughter ter of James and Hulda Jones Duncan The famil family moved to toI Hancock county Ill Illinois ois six miles from Nauvoo Ill where her father was a n personal friend of Joseph Smith founder of the church Her lIer father presented to the church founder the beautiful black horse which Mr Smith rode when he commanded in Nauvoo oo Le Legion ion The Duncan family moved to Winter Quarters in 1815 1845 and in the spring n of 1818 1848 started across the plains in a company headed by Heber C Kimball arriving in Salt Lake that fall Mr Duncan was given iven the responsibility of furn- furn furnishing furn furnishing ishin fresh meat for the caravan by huntin hunting and his daughter when 12 years rears of a age e drove two yoke of oxen from the Sweetwater river in Wyoming to Salt Lake without a mishap The family come to Bountiful in 1849 She was married in April 1858 1853 to Charles Sto Stoddard who died several years labor She tau taught ht school at Randolph several years in 1878 married William Winters and moved to Nevada and later to Oregon where her husband was drowned in the Snake river in 1892 She then moved back to Bountiful ful where she had since resided She was very active in L D S and civic work Surviving are two daughters daug Mrs Hulda Stoddard Thomas Bountiful Mrs Susan Stoddard Wood Clearfield 13 grandchildren 43 great grandchildren and two great grandchildren great grandchildren Funeral services ices were held Wed Wednesday at 2 p m in the Bountiful Tabernacle with Bishop Quayle Cannon officiating Mixed quartet When First The Light of Truth Burst Forth invocation Bishop Amasa Clark dark quartet III I Know That M My Redeemer Lives Remarks Henry Wood quartet 0 My Father remarks Isarel Call vocal solo Delta Marie Bur Bur- Burin Bur ingham in ham remarks Rulon S Wells of Salt Lake remarks Bishop Cannon quartet Rest Rest On The Hill lull Side Rest John H Burningham ham The grave in inthe inthe inthe the Bountiful cemetery was dedi dedi- dedicated dedicated dedicated by David R R Tolman |
