Show October 3, 1983 Page 10 The Thunderbird Monday, Ehrlichman talks of China by Nani Lii Staheli & mv S''' TlJ The 1983-8Convocation series began Thursday, Sept. 29 with John Ehrlichman, who spoke to an enthusiastic audience that nearly filled the SUSC auditorium to capacity. Ehrlichman, who replaced former senator Eugene McCarthy as the first Convocation speaker, presented his insights and experiences from a recent tour of China, as well as his views on other issues relating to his career as domestic adviser to former President Nixon. Ehrlichman began his remarks with a slide presentation of China, which included pictures of rural China that the average tourist is rarely allowed to see. Most visitors are usually prevented from going more than about 12 miles from the main cities, he said. Ehrlichman stressed that the conditions in this communist-rulecountry are different than what most Americans would expect. Due to the fact that 80 percent of China is of back country" and that it makes up the worlds population, Chinas economy is overwhelmingly agricultural. Nearly every square inch of the rural country is utilized for cultivation to feed the thousands of Chinas population, he said. However, an economy based primarily on agriculture in an increasingly industrialized world has caused many difficulties for the Chinese. This enormous nation is teetering, said Ehrlichman. It is an illusion to think of it as a great economic power. From his own observations, as well as his association with political leaders in China, Ehrlichman gave several examples of recent changes that are taking place in China to meet the 4 - i- r s"j a y t'vx- -s : d j t t 4 1 .IF? i i 4- - John Ehrlichman, an adviser to former President Richard Convocation season with a Nixon, opened the 1983-8- 4 presentation curiously devoid of the Watergate scandal that has dogged him for 10 years. one-fourt- h demands of its economy. Since the cultural revolution, farmers have been allowed to keep the profits from their produce and the government has also permitted others to start their own personal businesses. Part of the reason is incentive, explained Ehrlichman. But it also soaks up unemployment and takes care of some of the responsibility the government cannot have over so many people. Ehrlichman visited China to write an article for Parade Magazine. Ehrlichman is currently employed as a writer and commentator. During the presidency of Richard Nixon, he was Nixons domestic affairs adviser and was involved in the Watergate scandal of the early 1970s. Since his imprisonment for conviction of perjury and conspiracy during the Watergate trials, he has written extensively on his experiences, which have resulted in two books The Company and The Whole Truth. Of his career in the White House, Ehrlichman said that the most important thing that makes one qualified for such work is the president's confidence. There has to be a certain chemistry between the President and the people he works with. Ehrlichman related how he had begun to work for Nixon m 1968 as his advance political successful election, campaign manager. After the he assisted in planning new governmental policies and changes. He was then offered an important position in Nixons administration. While reflecting about Watergate, Ehrlichman said he believes that future Americans will probably tend to view Nixon less harshly than they have in the past. There will always be the stain of the scandal, but more perspective on the action will come through.
