believe that it will be one of the most Imposing funerals ever seen in Salt Lake President Winders Career President John Rex Winder son of ot Richard and Sophia Collins Winder was born at Kent England on December 11 1821 His parents were mem mom members members bers hers of the thu Church of England and the son was baptized in that faith raith when an infant and at the tha age of ot 14 was confirm confirmed ed as one on of its members under the hands of the Archbishop of Canterbury His early life was as spent in his native town and his early education such as it was was w as derived der ved through his own efforts At the age of 20 he went to London and obtained employment In a shoe store He was married on November 24 1845 and two years ears later left London taking charge of an establishment In Liverpool where he arrived d in August 11 and where he resided for the next six years year He entered the Mormon church in Sep September September ISiS 1848 Upon joining the Winder was associated with the Liverpool branch until February when he with his family sailed for America and Salt Lake At this time Bishop Winder had bad three chil children children children dren living and one dead two of the former being twin babies only oni 4 I months old Their trip across the ocean was on filled with hardship and When but ten days out from Liverpool Bishop Winder waa was taken tak n with smallpox time the disease being brought on board by a achild achild achild child which occupied pled an adjoining room He was the first to discover time the disease which soon spread and six of the party were quarantined In a small house boWIe erected on deck for their accommodation Through the illness of Bishop Winder his wife was left with no assistance In the task of caring for her babies So III ill was the bishop that his life was wag despaired of but believing he ho would recover his health he successfully fought off the disease e and was able to continue his journey The party landed at New Orleans and went to Keokuk Iowa by b way of St Louis and here Bishop Winder Inder Joined the com corn company company pany under Joseph W Young and made madeth ma e eth th the long trip across the plains to Salt Lake arriving In the valley valle on October 10 1853 1253 Shortly after his arrival In Utah Bishop Winder beeam associated as in business with Samuel in the manufacture of lancers stationed in Echo canyon in the fall and winter of 18 78 guarding the tho canyon and Its approaches with fifty men after Johnstons army had gone into winter quarters at Fort Bridger and General D H Wells and Colonel R H RT RT HT T Burton had returned to Salt Lake The tenseness of the situation having relaxed Captain Winder Tinder as he was then known was relieved of vidette duty d ty
