Show r tmr 2A Tha Summit County Boo ww Friday, March 24, 1995 Pam's Place Spring has officially arrived as of March 21 but Mother Nature decided to just say no. The wind that heralded the arrival of the much anticipated warm season was a definite downer. (Certainly gave an excuse for having a bad hair day.) Interesting to view through the window and watch the store patrons hustling about, holding onto their items while simply trying to re- main standing. The calm before the storm didnt last long as soon there were rain drops bouncing off the sidewalk. Two cute, young ladies scurried into The Bee office (all breath- less and excited) to bring me some school news. It didnt matter to them what the weather was like as they were simply enjoying what life was offering them. The strangeness was the fact that the news they handed me was the weekly weather report. Cute girls and added so much to my day! As the day turned into evening, the snowflakes began falling and combined with the howling wind, it was certainly a blustery winters eve. Nice evening to stay inside and yet it was bridal shower time, for are ten waiting in line to take their place. It takes a special person to be a coach. A player has to be willing to walk off the court or field with whether an attitude of their team has won or lost. If we teach nothing else sportsmanship should be top on the list of goals for coaches. Playing is a team sport that requires a team player. How can we teach our children to be team players when we have not discovered that for ourselves? On March 9, the South Summit School Board met and decided that South Summit should have a new mix of coaches. The coaches were then dismissed from their coaching duties. The only explanation given was that the board wanted a new mix. Several students from the high school were present at the next meeting 'and expressed their concern over this action. This was not taken into the board's decision. The coaches were then told again sportsmanship h, they woe dismissed without by Leon Simister, Columnist (Last of two parts - maybe) The crew of Endeavor, for two solid weeks, has been manning $193 million dollars worth of telescopes while circling the globe and transmitting back to earth some incredibly clear photos of the cosmos. Just tell us why a coach who so devoted to football and his players, who gave his heart and soul with his migraines to make it the best program he possibly could, who found ways to raise money and take the boys to camps to give them every opportunity to learn the game and who put more time into a sport than anything in his life, and not to mention that his last season was pretty successful, deserves to be fired without a reason. Also, keep in mind when these natural resources are cut down, or excavated from the earth take a tremendous amount of energy and yield plenty of pollution, recycling takes less energy, ergo dfe-lig- ht treat as it has been years since mans view of infinity has been enormously lengthened. The prehend. But even beyond that - with knowledge obtained from the orbiting (since 1991) Hubble Telescope - science has photographs of galaxies (The Coma Cluster) where virtually every object seen is a galaxy (Carl Sagans Pale Blue Dot) each containing billions of stars as is found quite probably, in our own Milky Way. Bearing in mind this fantastic accomplishment - and also with the knowledge that this particular section of the technically accessible areas of the known universe represents only about one hundred millionth of the known sky area - is a view of probably in excess of one hundred trillion galaxies: each containing literally billions of stars. How big, then, is the cosmosuniverse? Think now. What are the chances for other intelligent life out there? It bears the potentially enormous mathematical surety that life is there. The big question now. Has all this life just happened; a series of happy little, perchance, accidents? Or was it perhaps planned; guided by a great Omnipotent Architect? Bigger question: how long did it take? And how was the time measured? By our earthly time segments or some - even celestial - increment of time totally incomprehensible to our earthly-inhibite- d human brain? Man's, so far inaccurate, estimates of the end of the world - or second coming - will continue to be predicably inaccurate until more knowledge is obtained as to how time is measured on an eternal, or infinite scale. And why not? Because those are the terms in which God thinks. It would be of little use then, to assume - even though of about 6,000 years to the Bible (as interpreted) has recorded a time-slfor six Earth's the creation, plus another approxdays required represent die imate (historically recorded) 7,000 years from Adams time until now -that the end of this earth is nigh or even close to being nigh, simply beto cause we do not know whose measurement of the 6,000 year time-frause... ours or that of the Great Creator. For example, astronomers use an increment of measurement called a parsec which represents 3.2 light years. Then thats the megaparsec which represents one million parsecs or 3.23 million light years. Couldnt there exist, beyond our knowledge, a celestial time increment which is measured in millions, or even billions of our earthly years? Remember, I am alpha and omega... without beginning and without end." Certainly, when thinking in terms like that - of infinity and eternity - millions, billions, even quintillions of years would, in comparison, be significantly small units of measurement. But they would also prove to be significantly humonguous increments of time - and would leave glaringly apparent margins of error -for those who are struggling to make an accurate prediction of planet Earth's demise. Time exists only when it can be measured. Eternity, with its reputation of always. having been and always continuing to be, is by definition, immeasurable. So it can be said that measurement is the basic root different between time and eternity. What say we conclude this next week? A Concerned Parent Name Withheld By Request Many people may say that coaches are a dime a dozen and there good folks, the weather outside was forgotten for a few hours. Waking Wednesday morning, it was once again a winters day scene and as I was cleaning the snow off my truck to come to work, I thought of all the happy snow bunnies who were probably out playing (since they were too sick to go to work). Driving to work with the gorgeous blue sky and warm sunshine shining down on the coated trees and crystal streams was a neat treat. As if that werent enough, a dear friend from school dropped in the office to say hello. What a special astronautscientists aboard produced a remarkably clear photograph of the explosion of a star which occurred 60 million light years ago, and it took .that long for the light of its happeqyig to reach us. A light year is the distance light travels at its speed of 186,000 miles per second. If I read correctly, the star would have been about 71 Quintillion miles away. That's the number 71 followed by 27 zeros... surely a lot further than I can com- rea- son. When you vote in the next election, it would be wise to think 'labout the reasons a person is running for a board position and what hisher agenda may be. The students at South Summit were not considered in this action against the men that they looked up to as their coach and friend. I am deeply saddened by the fact that my sons will never be able to play for Coach Scott Hunt and Coach Jerry Parker at South Summit. With the boards decision they not only lost two coaches they lost the respect of the community and the students. South Summit High School has received the sportsmanship trophy for the past two years, which must be contributed in part to the coaching staff at the high school. What that they were fined. It Its a Question of Time every game. What you may not understand is that a winlose record is more important to South Summit than a team that respects their coach, teammates, and themselves.
