Show lio IM last saturday evening ye editor bad occasion to drive out to the slough west of town the route taking in several farms lying along the bank of the slough while the hammond canal furnishes water for nearly all that section yet dry farming Is carried on quite extensively and it was surprising to see the good condition of the grain just for the fun of the thing we pulled up a few hand stul 0 grain and brought home to show what wheat has done this year without a drop of water and what is more gondert ert il on ground which Is hard and dry as the road almost the grain measures just live feet and four inches from the roots to the ends of the heads and the kernels are round full and good size the particular field where the samples were taken from was not plowed but simply disked and then the grain was drilled in when the drilling was done the ground was so hard that much of the seed did not got covered at all yet the wheat has grown and looking over the field today one gels the impression that there will be a very fair yield dy the way brigham has not awakened to the possibilities of the old sagebrush salt grass lands where the cos grazed for so many years vest of the city beyond the S P railroad since the canal was brought down there and water has been turned on the thirsty land a wonderful transformation has resulted alfalfa nourishes in abundance all over that section where the water can be conducted and a good many acres are being set out in trees erdmann and son have a tine looking apple orchard planted two years ago this spring the trees showing splendid growth good color and general thrifty condolon the erdmann ranch is drained by the old slough which pas sea through the center 0 it and the apple land lies high on a blutt where the alkali has no possible chance of cropping up in a few years those trees will yield a bar vest and will make their owners a bunch of money the city out to that section or country Is ideal tor driving being hard and free from pebbles making a dandy route for an evening spin alter old sol has gone to rest and the mosquitos have settled themselves on the surface of the water for the night |
