Show Sun Advocate A 1903 Friday, March Regionals begin tonight Conference honors coach , players By ANGIE HYRE Sports Editor If all else fails, send in the women and the College of Eastern Utah has done just that as the lady Eagles are set to begin play in the NJCAA Region I Basketball Tournament Coolidge, Ariz. in tonight Intermountain Collegiate Athletic Conference first ranked Snow College will meet Yavapai College tonight at 6 p.m. and CEU, ranked second, will play nationally Arizona Central ranked College at 8 p.m. Fridays winners will play Saturday to determine who will represent Region I at the national tournament March 14-1- April Hatch, sophomore, All Conference first team. at Northwestern 9 Mississippi Junior College, Senatobia, Miss. While the women were the only team from CEU to make the Regionals this season, other honors have recently bestowed organization. Jean Coach on been the Brooks, completing her first season at CEU, has been named as Coach of the Year by the Womens ICAC. Ms. Brooks is not a newcomer to athletics however. She has been involved in the coaching field nine for and years established herself as one of the best coaches in Southern Nevada. The award is not new for her either. Ms. Brooks received Coach of the Year since this is my first coaching season here. But most of all I would like to thank my assistant Lori Woodland and to my athletes for doing their best. for three years while in the Nevada school system. Before coming to CEU, Ms. Brooks was head womens basketball and track coach at Chaparral High School in Las Vegas where her teams have been among the top five in the state for the past six years. Ms. Brooks is a native of Louisiana from To top off the recognition for the CEU lady Eagles this season, three members of the squad have been listed on the All Conference 1983 and graduated State Grambling team basketball College with a bachelor of science degree in physical education. She earned her master of science degree from University of Nevada-La- s Vegas. Im elated, she said of receiving the award. It is a great honor. They managed to hang in for three of the four day event. Pacing East Carbons scoring were Kaye Harris with 14 points, Robyn Palacios with 9 and Natalie Peterson with 8. Friday was a different story as the lady Vikings came home with a disappointing loss to the South Summit Wildcats, The biggest problem for the Vikings was the quick 2 lead the Wildcats grabbed early in the game. Playing comeback ball was tough for East Carbon but the Vikings managed to get within 2 points several times. However, East Carbon just couldnt seem to pull ahead. scoring Leading Viking Friday was Harris with 12 points, Palacios with 8 and Peterson with 6. Veltris knocked off first half champs, Food Center, giving these front runners an even split in four meetings this season. The loss dropped Food Center into a tie for second place with CycleWorld getting a chance at second half honors as they play both Veltri Drug and Food Center the final week. The teams were tied at 8 at the end of regulation time and 2 after the first overtime period. Tom Davis, Roger Tolley, Dave Verdi and Kevin Conway came through with the points to win for CycleWorld in the second overtime. U.S. Fuels biggest offensive threats were Bimbo Olson and Todd Mc62-5- 7, 48-4- Hezalee Ellington topped the Grako effort with 19 points, Joe Rukavina had with 12 and Matt Pollock with 11.
