evening jan 8 1858 F from rom ohp board of the D 1 A aana and af society J I 1 we deem it a duty at this particular time and season of 0 the year to call the ole attention ioa loa of our oun citizens to several items interest fou tou touching ching their a and nd horticultural pursuits and hope from time to time to write and speak on such subjects as will promote a laudable ambition forthe for the practical development of those lightly burrowed but inexhaustible or of wealth that abound aboon ahr to our mountain territory believing as we 0 do o that the time hab has arrived when we wic as a pk eppie epple must be producer all we consume asada view of that fact we vve feel eel to notice in ag our first pa 6 communication ni those things which em to us its to have apen the most neglected viz wool wooi flax hemp cotton simar stow shelter for animals F WOO U we hehn behr hearl bily aily ally in inquiries s for til thiis 11 3 article which has hag caused caused lis tig to reflect why the market is BO so poorly convict sup blied with that staple commodity our convictions ria ris are that it has chlell chiefly y arisen from the negligence ence of our citizens in not bestowing at aa an earlier date daie mure to supplying themselves wit one of the most moat useful ul dome domestic animals with which we are acquainted quai quain ted again we are satisfied from 0 our ur own personal knowledge that another ca cai J f the thes thee carcity scarcity of bath both wool wooi and sheep arises from the present manner of keeping flock flocks asboth both 14 the owners and the herdak herdsmen e n to whom they are entrusted we propose to adopt that policy yAle which li will wil remedy those evils of which the community comment ty most justly complain we ard ari are 8 satisfied atia atla fied that a large proportion of the losses that accrue to the owners of 0 sheep arises from the wa want nt of care during the winter geason season nand and that iosa losa which the owner sustains is felt and realized by the community at large we suggest 0 to the owners 0 of f sh the pr present dregent es it in mode od 0 or bendin tending flocks be partially ab abandoned dd d d e especially es pei pel ally aily the win winter teras ah we f feel ee I 1 satisfied af I 1 ed in mort most 0 bof 0 thip recen t losse losses a accrue e to the thae flocks from the want of proper food and shelter the winter vinter the want of which produces the beatr scab pel trot and colds while many die from sheer poverty of condition and these those that live lose a large larie percent per cent of their their aleece fleece from drom the above causes while the increase is shortened by abortion and the mother ewes are barely able to bust busam loin djin their own feeble natures from the scanty pasturage af afi oyied them amii amid the adow snow banks on the gare cage that they are often and I 1 most usual usually ay found grazing ulon upon while the wool of such flocks is of a poor qu quality wilty by adopting tile the manner of keeping flocks throy the winter that we would recommend the avel Ivel weight alit glit and quality of the fleece would ba be in crea creased sela seia as the flesh and the wool secretions are derived from the same source consequently the more flesh and fat the more wool wooi woo the additional softness of fleece evenness and soundness of the fabres fibres may be traced to the bame game cause which increases its weight to argue that warm lambing houses and ewes well cared for would increase increase the number of lambs we conclude not necessary and further th e r we need not inform practical men or reflecting ting minds that a good warm and dry shelter saves provender lder and arid ia is the means of making additional manure which subject alone isoble is one of no little interest to the community at large we wo would d now suggest and cordially recommend that all owners of sheep hire their flocks grazed razed through the grazing season of the year by careful and responsible shepherds and that they have them provided for during the tha winter months aasve as we have suggested t and where owners erlof of flocks find jt it lne ine inconvenient 0 to winter their sheep we would advise for the mutual befit of all parties that instead of letting g their sheep to one individual they tb ey let to several parties ties who can keep a few head each having them grazed with the flock to which they belong below through the grazing season thus placing within the reach of a number of families the means of obtaining wool and sheep for their labor grain an and d provender neither of which will now purchase either and this policy will also tend to enrich both stockholder and shepherd and within a few years we will find our market well supplied with both wool and mutton while our citizens can boast of being clad in apparel the workmanship of their own hands we would advise all to quit the slaughter of sheep under any pretext whatever until the number of our sheep is double that of our citizens FLAX flax is q an article upon which too much cannot n ot be said at this time aaita cuy cul cultivation ati Iti has been most shamefully neglected by us all and as a 3 people we find ourselves at this peculiar crisis destitute of the advantage of its cotton or lint from which we could provide oil ourselves with durable wearing apparel and almost all other useful domestic clothing and we feel grateful from the experiments experiment imade the past year that give live can say that our fondest anticipations have been fully realized and we cordial cordially tie recommend its culture to its fullest extent the ensuing year and will promise those who wil will sow their thel reed need seed on land well prepared and richly attended they shall reap as heavy a crop land as well coated with lint as can in any country HEMP also has been quite successfully cultivated the past season seas bri which article if cut while rather green jbf or the manufacturing of again rope and cordage will yield as fine a lint an and d 1 is a wiil will near pear aa as good for common or coarse wearing apparel as flax lint and from the scarcity of every description of material for clothing sacks rope y ac we ive reco recommend its cult culture feeling satisfied that it will be fully as remunerative n z crop as can be grown in the territory as hemp will produce one third more lint to the acre than F flax flaw a X COTTON we feel haag happy in in rel rei reiterating keratin the fact communicated munica ted by gov ov young in his bh annual message to tho the legislature ac c that a small crop of cotton was waa grown within our territory Tern tory the past season and that preparations are arc making to supply our in ton tot and indigo which truly ie gratifying as we know that thab the e lye lie brethren thren thron planted and raised their present and first crop of cotton under many disadvantages and their success oun pur our former opinion that we can raise our own cotton for home con cop and we feel ja to bai sai say gay success success to the cotton colony and most heartily wish it was in ou r power to extend a helping hand band to aid them in producing that ar article articie ti I 1 cle cie which chiep chiefly y clothes the i inhabitants abit of the earth the wharfs ofala commercial cities and furnishes employment to more m inen en and women than any one article used by ainan rilan and we feel batie satie satisfied fied that in atah tah a field of enterprise in cotton raising is opening up that will eclipse its first introduction t on as au an article of tade t ade in the commercial world which fg nl inducement within itself to stimulate our enterprising citizens to at once engra enga gein giu the bui bul culture ture of that indi indispensable article S SHELTER alth ft we have on our remarks on wool and sheep particularly expressed our mind on shelter for stock which we cannot too forcibly impress on the minds of 0 our citizens as indispensably necessary and alid requisite in this climate for all animals provided for the use and comfort of man in an aa as we feel satisfied that humanity alone dictates that such buch animals should not suffer from neglect and we suggest suggests that in our haste and excitement to get rich that we shut not our souls against the spirit of kindness and benevolence to our stock but take that thab course to 0 provide shelter ehe iter lter and provender for them that is is profitable yo in man in and pleasing doged to gad |
