Assistant Professor of Psychology Lynn White said the skills learned in the lab will be valuable to students in the future as they enter the career field and attend graduate school. Most universities have bio-psychology facilities for psychology majors and those interested in health related fields, said White. Currently, the psychology depanment at SUU has no opportunity for students to research bio-psychology. SUU needs this lab to stay competitive with other universities, said SUUSA Sen. Rohen Reynard (ALH ). The lab will give students a working knowledge of bio-psychology and complement existing programs. White said psychology students will spend one-third of their time in lab, and two-thirds of their time in lec~ure. The lab will be used to assess the relationship between biological and psychological factors. White said some of the Jab experiments will include the investigation of the relationsh ip between stress, blood glucose, and memory. Also, biofeedback equipment, such as a heart rate monitor, will be used to monitor and control human physiology. White said the lab will be beneficial to students, because many graduate programs expect students to have practical application in research methods, as do many employers. This hands-on experience makes students more attractive to employers, said White. Officials in the psychology department hope the lab will be ready for use by fall semester of next year, but funds must first be acquired. The lab will cost more than $8,000 to set up and maintain, said White. The College of Arts, Letters, & Humanities Faculty Development Committee bas allocated $1,600 for the development of the lab. The SUUSA Senate has also allocated an additional $1,600 to the project. Other grants, both on- and offcampus, are being sought to fund the remainder of the project. White said the lab will open for all students, not just psychology majors. Students with a desire to do this type of research will be allowed into the class with the instructor per mission. Wpite said the lab will be located in the Life Science Building. Providing a full tuition SUU scholarship each year is the goal of a fundraising project now under way by the SUU Staff Association. The staff association is offering raffle tickets to win a pair of roundtrip airline tickets to anywhere in the continental United States in return for a donation to the scholarship fund. A drawing for the prize is scheduled April 14 at the spring general meeting of the association. The winner is not required to be present. Tickets are available through all SUU department secretaries. A $1 donation will buy one ticket, and a $5 contribution will purchase six chances toward the airline tickets. All proceeds will go into the scholarship fund. "The campaign is aimed at members of the SUU campus community," Pete Heilgeist, president of the staff association, explains. "This does not mean that we will not sell tickets off campus, but there will be no serious effort to do so. We would like to see the tickets sold to staff members, faculty, administration, students and people affiliated with those groups," The campaign goal is to raise at least $6,500 to bring a currently existing fund to at least $30,000 which will perpetually fund a full tuition scholarship in the name of the staff association. "Of course, if tuition increases., we will need to add to the fund to permit interest generated to match tuition costs," Heilgeist said. " Members of the staff association are very interested in providing this scholarship fund to assist worthy students." ~~~~~~~~~~~--.
