Show Hints For Holiday Driving Safety "Salt Lake City motorists should keep in mind the following winter driving tips during their winter travels," according to Police Chief J. Earl Jones. Start and stop slowly. 1 . Allow plenty of room between you and the car ahead when pavements are covered with ice and snow. You'll need far more room to start or stop than on dry pavement whether you have studded tires or even tire chains. Sudden changes in speed or steering can throw you into a skid. 2. Skids. If you should start to skid, steer into it. If the rear end slides right . . steer right; if it skids left . . steer left. But keep your wheels rolling. You can't steer a car that's in a locked-whe- el slide. 3. Stay alert. you feel drowzy, open the window, pull off the road and rest. Get a cup of coffee or a soft drink; even get out of your car and walk around. It will help you stay alert temporarily, but there is still no substitute for being well rested before you begin a trip. 4. Alcohol, drugs and driving don't mix. If you drink over the holiday season, be sure to allow plenty of time for alcohol to leave your system before driving. That means about one hour per average drink. Drugs such as cold tablets, tranquilizers or even aspirin can also affect your judgement and reflexes, especially if you should have an alcoholic "one for the road" before you start your journey. Stay alert! stay alive! 5. Prepare your car.
