Registration packets are currently available at the Youth Center, Building 883. Packets must be turned in between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m., April 7-11, For more information, call 777-2419 Deanna Melin, family care provider, holds 12-week-old Risati Siaosi March 27, just one week after she intervened in a lifethreatening health situation. Col. Linda Medler, 75th Air Base Wing commander, gave Air Base Wing coins to Melin and her son, Blythe, March 27 in recognition of saving Risati's life. Hours change for Outdoor Rec office Outdoor Recreation summer hours become effective April 21. Monday through Friday hours of operation will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m and Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon. Wilderness skills first aid course A wilderness first aid course will be taught May 6, 8 and 10 at Outdoor Recreation, Building 805. Topics will include basic patient assessment, basic wound care, splinting, animal and insect bites, and injuries caused by hot and cold temperatures and exposure. The course is open to adults and youth ages 13 and older. The curriculum is based on a mixture of Boy Scout first aid, American Red Cross standard first aid, and the CDS Wilderness First Responder principles. Cost is $80 per student and includes books and teaching materials. The course will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis for a maximum number of nine students. Classes will begin at 5 p.m., and will be held both indoors and outdoors. For more information, call Chris at 777-2225 or 777-9666. Lt. Col. Mark Pantone, commander of the 67th Aerial Port Squadron, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal on March 8 for his accomplishments in Afghanistan from May 16, 2007, to Sept. 16, 2007. While overseas, he served as commander of the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing's Mission Support Group. The public is invited to attend an information session on the degree at 6:30 p.m., April 9. The information session will be at the campus, 5251 S. Green St., Suite 300. The program will start August 18 at the university located just off 1-15 and 5300 South in Murray. ' The program prepares individuals for a career as a professional mental health counselor. No GMAT or GRE is required. Webster University is a nonprofit university focused on meeting the needs of students, businesses and working adults. Classes meet one night a week for four hours. To RSVP or for more information, call 281-4801 or email saltlake@webster. edu. caregiver intervenes when it matters most BY SENIOR AIRMAN BROK MCCARTHY 75th Air Base Wing Public Affairs A fter being alive for just 10 weeks, Risati Siaosi experienced a brush with death March 20, but thanks to the quick actions of a family care provider and her son, that's as close as he got. Deanna Melin, who has been a family care provider for a little more than two months, said baby Risati wasn't exhibiting his usual behavior. He was puffy, congested and just not quite himself. "It was nice out (that afternoon), so we decided to go for a walk to pick up my older son," Melin said. "I thought the fresh air would maybe brighten Risati up a little and make him breathe better. t( When we got back, I took him out of the carrier and laid him down, and that's when I noticed his lips were blue and he wasn't breathing right. His chest and stomach were caving in like he was struggling to breath. I picked him up to look at him better, and his lips were really blue and he was just kind of floppy like a rag doll." It was at this point she put the baby over her shoulder to rub his back and bounce him around a little to see if she could get him to breathe normally again. After a few moments when this wasn't working, Melin decided to call 9-1-1. "Everything seemed nice it was going in slow motion," she said. "I just remember after calling 9-1-1 and getting everyone rolling, (the 9-1-1 operator) asking if I knew how to do CPR, I said, 'Yes, but please just get here so I don't have to be- S COTT AIR FORCE BASE, 111. — A new, permanent headquarters overseeing Air Force global logistics support is now in operation at Scott AFB.
