When war began, moat Americana, including those in high placea in the government, were confident of an Allied victory. Today that confidence haa been consider ably shaken. The stunning Allied defeat in Norway, coupled with the developed fact that Nazi Germany haa a war machine of almost unprecedented efficiency, haa brought with it the grim specter of passible Allied kiss of the war. Today, most competent authorities seem to in which regard the European struggle as a toss-u-p, neither side has any decisive edge. They think that anything can happen. And that situation is forcing America to consider what steps must be taken against the event of a sweeping victory by the dictators, which would put all of Europe firmly under the heels of Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin. Sentiment in this country is strongly in favor of expanding our armed forces, especially our air and naval forces, as rapidly as possible. Facts revealed by the ruthless Invasion of Norway, Denmark, Holland and Belgium show a serious penetration of these countries by the fifth column from Germany, sod no doubt a similar penetration is taking place in America, particularly in South America. If Hitler wins in Europe, America will be faced with the potentiality of immediate economic and military inn vasion. At least such is the opinion held by Walter and his school of thought, who points to conquerors of the past like Alexander and Napoleon, who have always used their past successes to breed future campaigns. Germans are hungry, both for food and vic- -. tones, and success now means search for new resources through new victories. While another school of thought, led by Hoover, believe even a victorious German will be so exhausted as to find it exceedingly difficult to invade America, pointing to the strain Imposed upon them in landing forces in Norway, yet a successful and militant Germany, after the war, will soon recuperate sufficient to seek world domination. Irrespective of who is right in the present struggle, we find the aims and methods of Germany entirely a horrent to us. The world is threatened by a ring of dictatorships, headed by Hitler, and supported by Mussolini and Stalin, with Japan holding its tiger claws ready for the leap and already engaged in ruthless contest against a defenceless people. Contrast this array of preparedness with the weakness of America today. We need not berate Britain and France for unpreparedness. The democracies are always pacifist. Japans navy is almost at parity with ours toft day. Our own army is woefully lacking in guns, tanks, and other essentials, and even our best planes have proven inadequate against Germanys new fighting planes, as shown by the record of the Allies using our planes. America does not want to get into the European struggle. Our very abhorence of war is our own undoing. We have had the British navy as our first line of defense fog 160 years. If Germany can destroy that we must look to our own defenses. Our first step should be to clean house at home. No fifth column should exist in America. Every nazi, communist, or fascist in this land should be sent back home Immediately. Then lode to our army, navy and air force, as we would guard North America has a rendesvous with Destiny. Charles F. Kettering is very much right. When Science is first applied to our social system then Ml his other predictions can come true to the fullest. Yes indeed, "new jobs, new improvements, surpassing even the progress of the past. In fact jobs, for every employable person between the ages of 25 and 45 years of age, building a New America. With defense, waterways, safe highways, transportation systems, housing, health, recreation and amusement, production and distribution of abundance of consumable goods and services on a Continental scale for the profit and glory of mankind but not under a Price system for a cash profit Busy machines, yes; but "idle men, no I Could idle men accomplish these objectives on a Continental Basis? True, men would have Leisure and consuming privileges to enjoy their Leisure but idle, no If they sweat 4 hours each day, 4 days each week, 41 weeks each year for 20 years of their lives to provide abundance for their entire life Do they not still "eat bread by the sweat of thy brow? It will always take work, labor and sweat (mental and physical) to win the good things of the earth, but machine work in ever increasing amount, and human, in decreasing amounts. Yes, machines do wear out but 1 Lip-ma- . anti-aircra- not until they have paid for themselves many times over in saving the wearing out of humans. What will we do when we work less time to make a living and have more time to make a life? Men still would work, but at hobbies and Things I have always wanted ta do for there is much work to be done on cultural phases of human activities, for culture is the natural result of constructive leisure (The Continental Constabulary would guide those few who try to use their leisure destructively). The culture of the past haa been a culture of toil, poverty, insecurity, starvation, and misery and with the end of these will come the culture of abundance, under a Technate. What will be the culture of abundance? It too will prove that all the best of the past is but a wudl beginning for the future. When all these heights have been scaled, we may be given to see the vision of our destiny. But the end of all these, with the end of the Price THE AGE OF ABUNDANCE The world is emerging from the age of toil, poverty, starvation, and misery. A new world is being born Birth pains are being suffered by the masses during the process of remaking the world. We are emerging into the Age of Abundance. At least such is the dream for America by Technocracy Inc. whose students in Provo are weekly gathered at Provo high school studying the impact of present trends upon our institutions and economy. T. J. Weaver, leader of these students, answered last weeks editorial by pointing to an article by E. Merrill Root, in the Technocracy magazine. The following are extracts from it: The present is not an end but an origin. The great mistake of our present day thinkers is that they lode backward toward death, not forward toward birth. The t, they think, is finis at the mid of a book, when ity the present is simply the notes for the first chapter of a book about to be written. "Whoever talks of death and futility and the end does not belong to the new culture of abundance, he Whoever concentrates on the casualties of declares. the age of poverty and builds upon their ruins in negation and despair does not understand the age of abundance. The age of abundance depends upon mans mastery, upon his will to integrate and crown economic abundance with spiritual exhuberance, freeing itself of present tensions, turning away from death and the end, toward birth and the beginning, no says Mr. Root. Already we have the facilities, the means, the power, the technology of abundance, as witness the airplane, the streamlined train, the automobile, the modem factories operated entirely by electricity, on a Continental scale, modem city planning, functional and buildings, libraries and schools functional with sun and air, beautifully organized large-scafarms all these evidences of organic integrity and functional strength, filled with possibilities for a clean, noiseless, powerful civilization. Mans motivating forces of today hunger and money are to be replaced by a freedom of spirit, the new problem being to "make a life, not merely to make a living. Man is to be released from file horrible minor problem of making a living, and given time to pursue all the old elemental interests nature, love, curiosity, dancing of the mind, for being released from the drag of nature, he will be able finally to see the dream of Rosalawn Dances Every Saturday Night This Saturday night Is the secodn of the series of Saturday night dances planned for the coming summer. "We shall have plenty of daily bread therefore our energy will be free for intense direct realization. The three dimensions will be our servants, therefore we can explore the fourth. The machine, then mans servant, will no longer be mans god. We shall see machines for what they are an instrument and a means; we shall not any more regard them as an end or a creator. The age of poverty was like a tree planted in sandy soil that' must use all its energy to grow at all.
