Show nebraska is a barren country devoid of trees and the bleak winds used to blow over the plains with great force bot only did tha absence of trees make the sato appear unproductive and unlovely but it was admitted to be a positive injury to husbandry so the question was largely agitated how the evil might be remedied in january 1872 the board of agriculture mot and unanimously agreed to set apart tho tenth day of april for tree planting in tho state they named it arbor day and offered some prizes to those planting the largest number of trees on that particular day the result was quite wonderful as the first year on the any named over one million trees were planted in 1874 the governor of nebraska proclaimed april arbor day and it has been a holiday in the state ever since statistics show that on this particular day nebraska citizens planted between 1872 and 1888 two thousand seven hundred and fifty millions of trees which set two feet apart would covar about eleven hundred square miles of ground the effect the trees have on the climate of the state is marked and it gives the country a much finer appearance A number of states have patro ned after nebraska and arbor day is now quite generally celebrated in the west and northwest in utah it is not observed we are sorry to say though all realize the great importance of tree planting our many fine shado trues show the interest taken in the past and still there is room for many more trees they would prove a groat advantage as well as an adornment around every farm in the valley it does not require much time or expense to grow i iu buu is the time to attend to this duty we say duty because a man owes it not only to himself but also to his neighbors and future generations we hope this spring will be marked by a general observance of trea ing and that the next legislature will provide for arbor day as a holiday in utah |
