completely completely com com- glassed in This is the expansion of the book store and it is estimated estimated estimated esti esti- mated to be completed sometime sometime sometime some some- time in April The only holdup holdup holdup hold hold- up is waiting for the double doors to be delivered Otherwise Otherwise Otherwise Other Other- wise everything is said to be right on sc schedule There will be a minor amount of of- shuffling around upon completion of the store but it seems as though it is going to be worth the effort When the expansion is completed it is estimated to tobe tobe tobe be approximately the size of the Weber State Book Store The book store was originally originally originally nally located on the down down- town campus In 1967 the store was in the administration tion building where the Financial Financial Financial Fi Fi- Fi- Fi Aids office is now lo lo- On December 14 1973 the book st store re was moved to the College Center and was opened for operation on January January January Jan Jan- uary 3 1974 The store has shown a lot lotof lotof lotof of growth since first opened in 1967 and our hopes are that with your support it will continue expanding Mr Bill Means book store director has this to say about the expansion At this time I am really pleased with the expansion of the book store and I have no complaints at all GAME ROOM All that is known at this particular time concerning the game room is that it will willbe willbe willbe be moved to the basement upon completion of the room room in the basement that has been set aside for this pur pur- pose The basement games room will be double the size of the present one New meeting rooms will be placed where the games room is now located The games room in the basement will bring the area to a new perspective CAFETERIAS AND FOOD SERVICE The cafeteria expansion is necessary because of the enlarging enlarging enlarging en en- enrollment at SL and the plans they have made are really exciting Some research has been done at Utah State and other other other oth oth- oth- oth er campus areas concerning food services and although our campus is not as large as others our hopes are that we may be able to incorporate a ate te some similar ideas so that students may be more plea pleased ed with the service they receive in In the cafeterias Presently methods of S quicker service are being researched researched researched re re- re- re searched also a greater variety of items are being added to expand to students' students different likes and dislikes This way it will be more pleasant for students to enjoy a decent meal In the food service area a scramble system is being dis dis- cussed This was explained to tome tome tome me as follows A scramble system is a system where an individual can go into a cafeteria cafeteria cafeteria cafe cafe- teria area select the items they are interested in move to the cashier and have a complete meal within a matter matter matter mat mat- ter of approximately 2 min min- utes This will cut down the time without waiting in line and wasting almost half of a students student's break time This arrangement is similar to a food supermarket Some of the different items in the scatter system will be hot food line rotary service with hot entrees and a beverage beverage beverage bev bev- line The most discouraging thing about a cafeteria is to towai wait wai t in a line behind someone someone someone some some- one who cannot make up their mind This is the reason reason reason rea rea- son quicker service is being worked on A and a sweet shop are also to be included in the expansion The will be a refrigerated compartment with sliding doors which will contain such items as diet drinks juices yogurts ready readymade readymade readymade made sandwiches milk fresh fruits a and d a lot of items which students would choose if they were on a diet The sweet shop would carry a variety of sweets to choose from This way you could just spend a few pe pennies pennies pen pen- nies on something you like instead of wasting money on something you dont don't really want for instance from the vending machines These two items could very possibly come about in the next couple of weeks In fact the space has already ady been measured where they will be placed There are also plans to place booths in the south cafeteria cafeteria cafeteria caf caf- eteria where the expansion is isnow isnow isnow now being done This will make it a little more cozy and a lot more comfortable for the students The major part of renovation renovation renovation renova renova- tion and expansion will bedone be bedone bedone done in the service area of the J cafeteria but there are sonic some plans of renovation being being being be be- ing worked on for the kitchen area also There will be new and Improved improved improved im- im proved equipment and just possibly there may even be some special ovens placed in the kitchen to make fresh baked bread But this is just justin in the basic planning stages a at t the present time But basically basically basically bas bas- the kitchen area will stay about the same CRAFT CENTER Basically the craft center is mainly a resource center to work on handicrafts or to spend extra leisure time Classes in the craft center are offered for those who would like to start a craft right from the beginning But that doesn't mean you have to take a class to work on a project although there is an instructor in the crafts center if you need his help on any project In the craft center are lockers for the use of any student for storage of personal personal personal per per- items and such while the s student t is attending classes Starting next quarter some night classes will be offered offered offered of of- but the results of this will be dependent upon the response of the students in in- There has to be a justifiable amount of students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents before an instructor can begin evening classes As f for r the expansion of the crafts center at the present time an exhaust air release is being to rid the center of dangerous fumes and gases that come from the machinery and such The cement ceiling will soon be covered with a nice acoustic ceiling to cut down the noise in the center There are other definite plans for expansion of the crafts center but these plans will be put to work as the need arises One of the problems with the crafts center is that quite a few of the items it has to offer are also offered elsewhere elsewhere elsewhere else else- where on campus so students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents dont don't really take an in int interest interest in- in t terest rest in finding out what else is in the craft center For example there are silk screening ma materials and in- in Cont on pg 4 CC Expansion cont which are also offered in commercial art carpentry but there is a special carpentry class on campus This results in students restricting these uses to the educational classes offered elsewhere on campus because in the center there are no grades and no fee required It is totally up to an individuals individual's interests when to utilize the center Students staff and any personnel personnel personnel per per- at may utilize the center with no fee in in- But for those who donot donot do donot not attend there is a small fee of 10 which covers usage of the center and a small insurance fee is also included in the 10 For most of the hobbies that tha t are worked on in the crafts center students supply the majority of the supplies needed But there are some materials in the center that can be used as the individual may need them such as silk screen ink rivets and and ends for leather work and carpentry carpentry carpentry carpen carpen- try and hardwood items The clubs at are invited to utilize the center to construct posters and booths and such for upcoming events on the campus All tools needed are on hand Up until this time only one club has utilized the center for such activities A print machine is also to make small neat posters There is a darkroom available available avail avail- available able for use but it is empty most of the time It is mainly used by Charley Johnsons Johnson's photography class and the staff of Points West It is just a one man darkroom darkroom dark darkroom room but it can be used once an individual has checked checked check check- ed edwith with the instructor The craft center was first opened approximately 3 yrs ago Charley Johnson was the instructor last year and Kevin Frazier i is running the center this year It seems as though the center center center cen cen- ter is running smoothly although although although al al- al- al though there is really not that much feedback coming into the center Most of the individuals who utilize the center are off- off campus people Not many students use the center In fact there are probably quite a few of the students who do donot donot donot not even know that there is a abasement abasement abasement basement area At the present time the upstairs upstairs upstairs up up- stairs college center entrances entrances entrances en en- trances are situated in such a away away away way that when a student or any individual enters the cener center center cen cen- ter er the stairs leading to the basement area are hardly noticeable This js is another part of the center that is going to be changed The doors are going to be switched around so that students will be able to notice notice no no- nolice tice lice the stairways The greatest need for the crafts center at the present time is student participation Cont on pg 5 eX Co fege c Co Cc l land and student initiative The center can expand as the need arises but only if there is a demand for the crafts and different hobbies it can offer to those who are interested The crafts center at is your center Informal yet structured classes lasses in traditional traditional traditional crafts and popular handicrafts are offered each quarter for all those who are interested The facilities of f the crafts center include clay studio darkroom I a- a V fA r w t f is an open registration sch schedule ule So come on students lets let's get together toge er on this crafts center Take some time to check it out You may find something that you are interested in
