Ahlstrom Family Support Center Did you know that 32,434 men and women of the active Air Force received Air Force Aid Society assistance in 1985? That's 5.4 percent of the Air Force! In a preliminary annual report, AFAS spotlights statistics showing convincingly that the Air Force community does indeed help its own, and that one of the most effective avenues to help is through the Air Force Aid Society. More than $19 million in emergency assistance went to Air Force people in the form of interest-fre- e loans and grants during 1985, the highest level of assistance in the history of AFAS. Ninety-fiv- e percent of that help went to the active force, with 95 percent of that going to individuals in grades technical sergeant and below. 43-ye- ar Typically, financial assistance went for basic needs such as food, rent, utilities (32 percent); repair of essential vehicles (19 percent); and funeral or emergency leave expenses (14 percent). The rest went to help cover other personal emergencies such as essential dental work, member's share of CHAM-PUpayment, the high costs of some PCS moves, and budget restructuring test programs. The society's Guaranteed Student Loan and Parent Loan programs also showed substantial growth in 1985 as another 5,568 Air Force people and faloans. mily members received Since 1979, 54,921 members of the Air Force community have received AFAS GSL and Parent Loans totaling more than $119 million. To underwrite these loans, the society paid $341,180 in administrative or guarantee fees in 1985, a cost of one dol lar ior every $313 m loans outstanding, a bargain investment in vital emergency assistance operations. Earnings from the society's investment fund were used to supple- ment these operations. S Heirforce A number of parents have recently recruited new members into the Air Force family. The recruits were brought into the Air Force via USAF Hospital Hill.
