Show History recalled on eating house By ELMER LUDVI LUDVIGSON ON Down by the railroad track In MantI Mantl stands a large house Something like 68 years ago It was known as the Eating House It was built by Lucy and Dod Peacock The passenger and freight trains passed the house each day as they made their runs to Marysvale and then back to Salt Lake City The regular train crew busInessmen businessmen bus bus- salesmen as well as other passengers traveled the rails These people became aware of the splendid food and courteous management of this eating house ManU Mantl became the stopping place for travelers from the south as well as the north Popularity Increased which ne necessitated the hiring of some of oC the young girls from Sterling and ManU Mantl to staff stat the eating establishment Every day the food tood had to be cooked fresh These were the days of no refrigeration When they featured fried chicken at 1230 It meant early tion Things were In a whirl of excitement as Lucy and the girls prepared for the arrival of the train Lucy and the girls were In a whirl of train-time train excitement of which she at least once a day would say Oh Ohl Girls Its It's almost 11 Those chickens have to be caught killed picked cleaned cooked and on the table In an hour and a half half half- wheres where's Johnnie She said this all In one breath Johnnie was a year ten-year-old who had the Job of catching the chickens and then cutting of off their heads Believe Belleve me chickens feathers and dishes were flying not to mention the heads of those eight chickens Three of ot Lucys Lucy's girls from Sterling were Ellen Peacock Rinda Peterson and Preal Snow I know these facts are true because I married one of ot these girls Preal Snow This stop on the branch of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad was an exciting place for tor some time Ume But as time Ume went on as It always does Lucy by and by was compelled to quit the hard work and worry Involved In this operation Those who knew Lucy re remember remember re- re remember member her for tor her wonderful food but most of ot all the way she served It with love |
