The first and most obvious answer is that an interest rate of 4l to 5r is good return indeed, and people who cant afford to take any kind of risk with their money should d with that kind of interest je rate. well-satisfie- The second and answer is that if you can afford a measure of risk, 4 to 5' on your money may not be so attractive not if it is possible to make more on your money, as we believe it is most times, by investing in good common stocks. Weve got some pretty good reasons to sack up that opinion, but first, in simple lonestv we want to be sure you understand that in talking about common stocks, were not talking about a return that is guaranteed or continuous or certain in any way. Common stocks are a risk investment. You can make a lot of money. You can lose a lot of money. And our conviction that you can make more money by investing in good common stocks than by any other form of investment on which weve seen data shouldnt lead you to buy stocks unless you can afford the risks involved. Thats why weve always said that before you invest, you should be able to cover your living expenses comfortably, you should have adequate insurance, and you should have to meet emergencies. savings But, if you have funds over and above what you need to meet those requirements, we think you should consider investing them in common stocks because, as weve said, we think you can make more on your money that way than through any other orm of investment we know of. Some of the reasons which make us feel iretty confident about that were best study conducted spelled out in a three-yea- r of Americas one outstanding graduate jy schools of business, and the results were summarized in an article, Rates of Return on Investments in Common Stocks in the Journal of Business of the pub-ishe- d University of Chicago Press. The study covered closing monthly prices and dividends of all common stocks fisted on the New York Stock Exchange for a and thirty-fiv- e year period the published article shows the rates of return for 22 different tyme periods, chosen to cover boom and bust, war and peace, that would on the average be available to the individual investor who selected stocks at random with equal probabilities of that is, exercised no judgment. (Continued from Page One) then the school board hasltly toted to adopt the document. One critical change, of which GEA representatives seemed unaware, was a simfrom ple word switch which shall to may weakens GEAs position as formal negotiating agent for Granite District teachers. The paragraph dealt with annual review and revision of the document. It was the manner In which said a GEA It was done, officer. "After all, weve worked on an editing committee for months and had the understanding wed review the document when It came up for adoption. My only present answer to hls charges Is that Mr. Larson was repudiated and rejected by hls own Democratic party In 1962 because of hls record as a county commissioner. If hls record was so good, why was he rejected? The one thing that makes It a little easier to settle back Into the everyday routine is the many wonderful memories of places just visited. I like to recall the parts of a trip and the places I simply must Id like to be able to return to someday. But, for the time being, Ill just have to satisfy this wishful thinking by looking forward to some short trips In the Immediate future. For example, a quick group trip to the coast. Group fares are not a new thing with the airlines. But, for domestic travel In our area Its not too often that a situation arises where It will fit. There Is one, however, with the football contest between the University of Utah and California at Berkeley on Saturday, November 14. We have blocked out a number of seats on a late afternoon flight to San Francisco for Friday, November 13th, with an open return and have booked sufficient fans to assure the group rate. It will amount to a 20 savings. The sweet feature about group fares Is that you can return any time. So, If you want to spend a few days In San Francisco, you may do so and still qualify for the reduced rate. Of course, the results of buying one stock or group of stocks might have been quite different from average results for all stocks, and past records give no assurance of future performance, but we think the study has produced conclusions of considerable consequence. We cant set down all the conclusions here wed be glad to send you the full, article, if you are interested but here are some of the key findings. ( 1 ) If you had invested an equal dollar amount in every common stock on the Big Board starting in January, 1926, and reinvested dividends, your total investment by December, 1960, would have shown an appreciation in value equal to 9 a year before taxes compounded annually and thats after payment of all commissions. ( Note that that is a compound rate, not just a simple rate, and 9 compounded annually over 35 years, means that $1 grows to $20. ) (2) Aside from most periods ending in 1932 or 1940, the rates of return are surprisingly high. For half the twenty-tw- o periods, the rates ( with reinvestment of dividends ) are above 10 per cent per annum compounded anof the perinually; and for ods, the rates exceed 6 per cent. (3) These rates are substantially higher than for alternative investment media for which data are available and the alternatives which the professors considered were savings in banks and savings and loan associations, mortgage loans, municipal and U. S. Government bonds, and corporate bonds. easy-to-rea- BRING YOU THE NEW PRIZE WINNING d, 1 YOUR CHOICE LONG, LOW AND LUXURIOUS .. SEASONED TO TODAY'S TASTE . WHATEVER YOUR DECOR . . The .
