UTAH Davis county has entered the public eye as a place of outstanding football players and football teams. Added to the distinction of possessing the state's champion high school team, hcts come the brilliant performance of members of that team in the recent contest between northern and southern Utah schools. Carter Cowley, Junior Hill and Hal Bourne, from Davis high, playing on the north team, left no doubt in the minds of the audience that they were representative of the team now holding the state title. It was the passing arm of Carter Cowley that gave the crowd its most exciting moments and sent sports writers reaching for the superlatives. Completing 16 deliveries out of 20 started, the Davis star amazed and thrilled the audience with his spectacular application of aerial strategy to the gridAll-St- ar iron. Apparent were the same sparkling neuvers, flashes of speed, and perfection of timing that carried the Davis high team to the championship, as the northerners defeated their opponents with a score of To Carter Cowley, and that unerring passing arm, credit for the victory has been largely attributed.. All three of these young men Cowley, Bourne and Hill may be a 27-2- 6. source of justifiable pride for their families, their communities and their school. Already acclaimed on the threshhold of the sport, greater fame can be theirs in the future. In achieving his present status as an outstanding football player, Carter Cowley has emulated the deeds of his father, who made a name for himself as a quarterback for the University of Utah 20 years ago. The Davis county boys were playing under the guidance of their own coach, Lee Liston. Coach Liston's unusual qualifications as a football strategist, demonstrated when he piloted the Davis team to the state title, were game. emphasized in the All-StLast fall the Davis team with Coach Liston at the helm, achieved a great record in capturing the title. They eliminated the opposition with a methodical and unbroken procession of victories, unmarred by a single defeat. During the season they scored a total of 153 points to the oppositions 33; and placed the ball over for touchdowns 22 times while their own line was penetrated only five times. The curtain will go up on a new season d within a few weeks, and we are looking to a repeat performance of what took place last year. ar for-ar- |
