Show roalin around with the NEA one in a series of articles by albert W epperson who with virginia and shirley are currently with the national association party in convention in the pacific northwest with a 1 post convention trip to alaska in looking over our program it appeared that a great deal of our time would be spent on the water during our national editorial association convention trip to washington and the pacific northwest on sunday june 3 3 we boarded the canadian pacific liner princess patricia for an allday all day trip to victoria B C we sailed up puget sound with the olympic mountains in view to the west and the cascade range to the east cast past the city of everett wash on the right and later port on the left then out into the straits of juan de fuca As we turned into the outer harbor the american town of port angeles is across the straits a at t the foot of the As we docked we could see the beautiful empress hotel where we were to have our lunch the par lament building housing british columbian Colum bias government offices is one of beauty F following ol lowing lunch our buses took us to the world famous Bute butchart bart gardens which are situated in an abandoned quarry source of materials for a huge cement plant of years gone by depleted materials forced the but butchart chart family to abandon their cement making activity and they turned to landscaping of the grounds and planting of shrubs and flowers of every conceivable variety our visit to the gardens was in an off season we were told but we enjoyed the beauty of this most unusual spot because of the vast undertaking and unusual method in which it is operated we were told that HJO persons visit the gardens each year andl ana on a charge of 50 cents per person the project is maintained on a break even basis by p m sunday we were back on our ship for the return trip to seattle docking there at about 80 0 p in monday morning june 4 was spent iq in business sessions at the olympic hotel in seattle and at 1130 a m buses took us to U S navy pier where the N E A party boarded two destroyer escorts with the navy yard at bre merton as our destination coming into Br emerton we saw the valley forge bunker hill and oth others ers in in dry dock and on landing were taken to the navy cafeteria for lunch following our aloon meal we boarded a huge sea service transport por t and headed down the west passage west side of vashon island then near the tacoma narrows and past point defiance to tacoma naval station fine dance music was furnished aboard by the naval district orchestra with gallons of coffee and cakes served the ae neaera upon landing buses took us through tacoma and down to point defiance salt water park where salmon barbecued by the indians was our evening meal the tacoma news tribune and tacoma chamber of commerce were our hosts have you ever eaten fresh barbecued salmon if not youve really missed a theat the salmon is sliced in one inch steaks and a dozen or so slices are placed on sticks over a wood fire and cooked to a delicious blown this was served with corn on the cob and potato salad and really hits the spot following this wonderful meal we again were shown additional points of interest in tacoma during our bus ride back to the navy transport this was our longest day of the trip as we had been losing time at every point so after a two hour trip by water we landed back in seattle at I 1 a m tuesday thoroughly exhausted but happy with what we had experienced this day this evening at 8 we are to start I 1 on the alaska part of our trip to be continued |
