Show -ut) COMMUNICATION. Editor, Ogden Standard:. Will you oblige me by publishing tho following in your paper? As there has been a lot said about water and farming, and D. D. is advising ad-vising the farmers in regard to what kind of crops to plant and tho use of the water it seems as though he has got back to common sense. Now if D. D. is really in for helping the farmers I am glad to know it for there should bo something done right now or there will be a lot of beet land planted to other' crops such fts peas feed barley, wheat and tomatoes that can be raised with one-third of the water needed for sugar beets- When he talked of turning twenty odd feet of water out ot the river that had not been appropriated 0I thought ho had gone wrong somewhere. Now the sugar company treated the farmers very well last year only the tare was too much for the price thoy pald. I think the system is a good one but they must pay more for that kind of goods, as every pound of beets was first class, free from dirt and lea'f and the boys worked hard to raise all the beets they could. It will be im-possible im-possible to grow as many boots this year as last unless there is a lot of money spent to secure more water and 'every one who is beenflted should beelp pay the expenses, so I think tho sugar company should pay $15 per ton this year for beets that have been cleaned of every pound of dirt, leaves and root, and that will bo an induce- I men.t to tho farmers to do everything I they can to produce more and it carl be done by driving wells and installing ! power plants, and taking care of tho water by small reservoirs. Of course it should be settled now so that the farmers could do a lot of the work now while he can get help before tho busy season. There is nu use of the company saying -'wc won't pay that price" and the farmer saying "we won't plant." I say we-should all take our share of tho task which con-i con-i fronts us and net in anrl Hn mtr aVini-n in trying to produce all we can and wait for a more favorable time to get rich. Now if D. D. or one of the company men would like to meet some of tho men who are not going to plant beets this year, I will take a little time and go with them and they can talk theN matter over and see if we can get some understanding. The most of them will fall in line if the company will come where we can afford to meet them as'we should liko to raiso beets. But the company must do its share and must help bear the expense. There are' reasons why I say the company must do all they can to encourage en-courage the farmer as they know that we pay dear for tools and labor and everything we buy and the taxes aro too high. Now to spend a lot of money to get more water is the question. Wo must have more for our crops or there will be less grown for it takes all our late water to grow beets and we cannot take care of our hay and other crops "and in order to feed our stock we have to take our beet money and buy pulp so the company gets tho best share of what the farmer earns. All they have to do is to add one more dollar to the hundred pounds of sugar and that puts the most of producing food on every one who eats IL I hope tho company will be good. If not, they won't get many beets nnd we will pay dear, for our sugar. Now you see, dear editor, this is a question that concerns all of us. J. P. CAMPBELL. |
