That was a particularly bad year for highway kills, but the number of deer killed was not a whole lot higher than several years during the 1970s," Chaffin said. For example, 1,800 deer were killed on and 1,683 highhighways in way mortalities were recorded in Each year in the spring and fall, Utahs deer populations migrate between winter and summer ranges, crossing small roads as well as major highways; and each year, hundreds of deer are killed in the process. Its called highway mortality in game management vernacular; but whatever its called, the result is the loss of large numbers of deer each collisions. year due to vehicle-dee- r The potential loss of human life is, of course, the largest concern; but the loss of wildlife, both real and potential, is a real concern to game 1972-197- 1970-197- Highway mortality among Utahs deer population increases significantly during the times of the year when deer cross highways moving to new ranges or when they come to roadsides to feed. This latter situation typically occurs during managers. In the fiscal year, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources recorded 1,962 deer killed on Utah 1977-7- inn spring months when heat absorbed by 8 the road extends into roadside shoulders and produces greenup of roadside grasses much sooner than in the foothills. Since deer utilize grasses highways, reported Chris Chaffin, regional information officer for the DTDOir&aiDo'v' in the early spring, roadway greenup attracts them to busy highways and them in direct conflict with fastmoving vehicles. This interaction between deer and motor vehicles occurs more consistently in areas where roads or highways intersect traditional migration routes. In southwestern Utah, some of the more noticeable intersections can be found in areas like Beaver Ridge, Salina Canyon, Black Ridge and all along Highway 89. These areas lose hundreds of deer each year. Chaffin reports that many accidents are unavoidable but that some could be eliminated if motorists would pay attention to highway signs that identify deer areas. If drivers would slow down just a little and pay a little more attention to the shoulders of the puts The skiing world will focus its the standings, with a win at Alta. Another amateur, 16 year old Bob Reap, Eastern National Mogul Champion from Pennsylvania, found himself up against former world Champion Scott Brooksbank in the ' second round, and to the thrill of both the crowd and himself, had an incredibly strong and exciting run to win. As fate would have it, Reap lost in the next round, to fellow Pennsylvanian Max McDonald. The Mens Champion at the $2,500 Budweiser Cup at Brighton was 23 year old 7 powerhouse, Stan Kolby from Boise, Idaho, who topped possibly the strongest field of Mogul Skiing talent ever assembled. Kolby pocketed $650 in cash and prizes, in a field of such headline world class names as: Scott Brooksbank, Craig Sabina, David Gottstien, Mark Archibald, Max McDonald, Steve Youngerman, Brian Whipple, Bruce and many Bolesky, Stu others. the last major professional skiing event of the 1979-8season on Saturday, April 26 at Alta, Utah for the 4000 Budweiser American Pro Skiing Finale, the final stop of the 1980 Budweiser American Pro Skiing Tour. The American Pro Skiing (APS) Dual Mogul Skiing tour, with a total of nearly 20,000 in cash and prizes in seven stops, began at Powder Mountain, Utah in February, and culminates at Alta with the steepest course of the tour, Punch Bowl, and the crowning of the 1980 American Pro on 0 5-- Skiing Champions. The 1980 American Pro Skiing season has been the second season of the exciting Open format, inviting amateurs to test their skills in professional competition. The format continued to prove itself at the 6th stop on the tour on April 5 at Brighton, Utah. There, 18 year old Susan Borm of Salt Lake City, skiing as an amateur, outskied a very strong field of lady competitors to win the Budweiser Cup at Brighton with a close final match against Bobbie Chambers from Ogden, Utah. The field included all of the five APS Grand Prix leaders plus world champion mogul skier, Karen Huntoon, who had bad luck in the first round. Borm turned back the prize money, but won 25 Grand Prix points to move up to fifth place on the ladies computer, and within reach of taking second place from Lita Hitchcock in In Kolbys Final match, Dan Kurdy of Sun Valley, Idaho, gave him his closest battle of the day until Kirdy suddenly erased his chances at the title with a caught edge and crash in the final fifty feet of the dual course. It was Kolbys first final, and his first win on the prestigious mogul skiing tour. Kolby and Kurdy move into a tie for sixth place in the 1980 standings with the points garnered at Brighton. Third at Brighton was 20 year old of Snowbird, Utah, with Phil Boehne, 28, of Snowbird, Jerry Douglass fourth. Clinching the 1980 title for the, American Pro Skiing Grand Prix, ancn however, was the consistent Joe Cordeau of Squaw Valley, California, who has two wins,' two second place finishes, and a third, thus far, with $2,570 in winnings in 1980. With his uncharacteristic 9th place finish at Brighton, Cordeau sewed his 1980 season crown with a total of 105 points, leaving Sun Valleys Bill Campbell, with 70 points, unable to overtake. Cordeau will be gunning to finish 1980 with style, with a win at Alta after a mediocre showing at the previous stop on the tour. Cordeaus wife, a contender for the ladies title, will be rooting for him as an incredibly strong field of over 100 top mogul skiers is expected for the finale at Alta on the 26th. With the course placed on Altas steep Punch Bowl, Cordeaus favorite type of course, hell be hard to beat. The ladies 1980 Budweiser Grand Prix Title remains a close contest, as a shootout remains between four strong contenders for the crown. Leader, Cassedy Stien, of Salt Lake City is the faovite with 85 total Grand Prix points. She has one win this season, and two second place finishes. Lita Hitchcock, from Winter Park, Colorado, is very close in second place ever-dynam- road in deer areas, they could avoid hitting deer that spook when car lights g and vehicles approach them. Since deer usually feed at dawn and again at dusk, it is frequently impossible to see them until your car is very close! Chaffin said. The information officer also said that deer find their way onto roads and even the freeway in spite of very intense and costly fencing projects to keep them fast-movin- out. It may help, Chaffin said, for drivers to be aware of how a deer will react to an oncoming vehicle. Essentially, deer will don one of two things: they will take flight, in any direction, or they may just freeze. The best way to avoid the deer is to reduce the speed of the car sufficiently to allow the deer to avoid you. with 1980, points, and has won twice in at Park West, and at Grand 81 Targhee, Wyo. Hitchcock will be strong at Alta, as she reigns as 1979 American Pro Skiing Champion, and won the title with a win at Alta on the very same run in April of 1979. She would like to make it two in a row. In third place is Salt Lakes Greta Paulsen, 21 years old, with 75 points total. Paulsen is the only skier, male or female, to have won three consecutive American Pro Skiing titles (in individual tour stops), which she did in 1979. The long shot is Barb Cordeau (Mrs. Joe), who must win the Alta stop to win the title.
