When she didn't get up immediately, it put a little bit of worry into Mountain View soccer coach Mike LaHargoue as well. "If Dani doesn't pop up, you know it's bad," he said. "You could see tears and I knew. I see tears in some of the girls eyes and it doesn't mean anything, but with Dani I knew she was hurt." Moments before, Danielle had been going up for a header when she was shouldered and knocked off balance. When she came down, she landed bad, twisting her ankle. "I was just, 'Oh no, I've broke it.'" she recalled. "I thought I was going to be out for a couple of months again." Luckily, it was only a sprain she suffered Aug. 21 at Judge, and she only missed three games, unlike her last injury. Before last season Danielle had to have ACL surgery and missed her entire junior season after hurting her knee during a soccer camp. She sat out six months, but worked hard to get back to playing again, much like she's had to do after her most recent injury. "If there was a year to lose somebody, obviously last year would have been the year, but for Dani, I felt bad for her. Her life is soccer and she's such a soccer nut," LaHargoue said. It's not much of a surprise sur-prise Danielle is so into soccer. She said she started start-ed playing with her brothers broth-ers when she was only 4 years old and her dad started an indoor team in a boys league, so she played on that. When it came time for her to start high school, she played as a freshman on LaHargoue's team, but it wasn't was-n't the first time he'd met her. "I've known Danielle since she was probably a little third grader and just the cutest little kid," he said. "She has the same face, she's just about 2 feet taller." That first year, Danielle didn't start, but she saw plenty of time off the bench, mainly due to her versatility as a player. LaHargoue says she has the ability to play just about any position and can switch things up. "She doesn't have blazing speed, but her technique really real-ly makes up for what she doesn't have in foot speed because she's got such good foot skills," he said. "And, she's got a cannon, left or right." In her sophomore year, Danielle became a starter, helping the team to a state championship, but then, came the injury, causing her to miss the 2002 campaign. But just because she couldn't play doesn't mean she wasn't part of the team. "I've always came out and supported them and been to every practice and all the games while I was pHi. It's mostly during the time she's had to sit that she's become such a strong leader for the Bruins. At the beginning begin-ning of this season, Danielle was a nearly unanimous choice as a team captain, despite so many freshmen and sophomores never having hav-ing seen her play before. But, prior to the season, it was Danielle calling them on the phone and making sure they were running and getting into shape, preparing them for the upcoming season. While her recent injuiy has done a little bit to prevent her from leading on the field, LaHargoue said that when she isn't playing, she's almost like an assistant coach. "It was kind of neat to see what we'd been doing because I'd always played pretty much the whole game so I never really saw what we'd been doing wrong," Danielle said. "Just sitting out I got to see things we need to work on and things I need to work on while I'm in there." And, when she sees those things, she lets her teammates team-mates know, encouraging them to work at them and get better. Plus, hearing it from a peer instead of a coach helps to make the instruction more believable, LaHargoue said. But now that she's been continued on Page B2 i rni 1 r ir zzxr QcxpczjLDiZx I ;KT 'j?
