Salt Lake. Felt. 2. According to tha otatemrat of several physicians made at a special meeting of the ritjr board this morning there la an epidemic of ccrebro spinal meningitis In thia city. The situation La become euch that the board today decided to placard all house where there are cases of the disease ao aa to warn the public of tbelr existence. The medical authorities disagree aa to the dlaeaae being contagious but at the same time it is deemed best for the public health for the people to be warned of the exigence of the disease so that tbs greatest possible care can be taken to prevent Its spread. During the month of January tha health department reported 17 destha In this city from the disease and at present, according to an estimate made to tha board thia morning It la stated that there must be 35 cases of meningitic In the city at the present time. It ia perhaps the most dreaded disease known today and science has ao far failed to finds treatment for It. The mult Is that 75 per cent of cases prove fatal. Those present at tha board meeting this morning wtre Mayor Thompson, City Phyislcian - Stewart. Assistant City Physician Paul. Dr. Fisher and Dr. Mayo. A thorough discussion of the matter was had. after which It was decided to order all cases reported to the board of health and to plac placards on the houses where tne cases are. Under the law It la only necessary to report epldemle cases of the disease but the physicians all Hesitate to declare a cae of epidemic and hence very few cases are reported now. During the past week there was only one case of epidemic meningitis reported to the hoard of health. Yet there are conceded to he at least 15 ordinary rases of the disease In the city now. Hereafter all case will be reported and the houses will be placarded. The board also dismissed the food situation with Food Inspector Frailer and Chairman O'Donnell of the aanl tary committee of the city council. Mr. Frazier had had considerable trouble latsly with commission men and merrham handling spoiled oyriare and meats, and has confiscated a great deal of that foodstuff within the last two days. He we rer hla authority tu do so has been questioned by sums dealers, and further than that. It is well known fact that under the prtr ant law It Is almost impoaslbls to secure a erfnvlotlon for violating tbs pare food laws. Consequently the board decided to aek the legislature to amend the present state law so that there can ba no question about the authority of tho food inspector and so that convictions can be secured more readllv. The city attorney will he asked ta draw up an amendment to be ante mlttej to the legislature for Its consideration. SENATOR JEFF DAVIS. Washington, Feb. 2.
