National Nevada town proud of its nuclear test site By DAN NAKASO Knighl Ridder " INDIAN SPRINGS Nev — travelers Sarah Jones Stiv Morrison Cedar and his mutt named Rebel could have found a better place to be strand- ed The folks who live in the Indian Springs desert aren't too hospita- ble to strangers Especially lately "One guy told me 'You with We kill Greenpeac-er- s Greenpeace? around here" the Cedar said In Indian Springs Greenpeace protesters are something to be scorned mocked and despised Three times in three days Greenpeace and other protesters ventured onto the massive Nevada Test Site to try to stop "the country's second nuclear weapons test of the year The test was delayed twice and finally went off Thursday morning Indian Springs — 42 miles northwest of Las Vegas and 26 iniles south of the Nevada Test C r i One guy told me Newspapers "You with Greenpeace? affiliated with Greenpeace or any other organized group They just happened to get stuck in the community of 2000 But to residents their dress and politics make them just as bad as the most Greenpeace proponent On Monday six Greenpeace hikers were arrested for allegedly trespassing on the site Tuesday another group that included Pentagon Papers figure Daniel Ellsberg also was ar rested And Wednesday a third repregroup of sentatives was arrested Each time Greenpeace officials said the alleged trespassers delayed a planned test Indian Springs residents estimate that half the town works at the test site And other workers stop off at businesses such as the Indian Springs Casino Tina's Cafe or the Stop 'N' Go on their way home to Las Vegas each day "I don't know what would happen if they (site officials) ever shut down" said the bartender of the Oasis Bar the only drinking establishment in town outside of the casino "There'd be thousands of people out of work" said the woman who didn't want to be identified A Nevada Test Site worker at the end of the bar — slugging down gin and tonics to jukebox country and western tunes — envisioned what would happen if Greenpeace prevails "A bunch of them Greenpeacers would be lynched That's for sure" he said declining to identify himself Even under the cloak of anonymity it's nearly impossible to find anyone with a bad word for the explosions that occasionally shake Indian Springs The town is bordered by the Indian Springs Correctional Facility to the south Indian Springs Air Force Base to the tast and the lest site to the north And several times each week pilots of the aerobatic Thunder-bird- s team fly over from Nellis Air Force Base to practice their spins loops and dives But it's the test site — 100 square miles larger than Rhode Island — that dominates the area Particularly this week demonAbout 200 strators from various groups protested outside the site Tuesday and Wednesday Nye County sheriffs deputies arrested 77 and irritate lungs has appeared in the San Joaquin Valley one of the nation's prime farm areas researchers say But they say pollution controls are reducing the danger "At present there is a close fertile Kern County pollutants are steam boilers produced largely by used to inject steam underground to ease crude oil extraction and from vehicle exhausts said Jacob who conducted the study for his
